The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Apprentice of the Year

Mel Osborne

Said the following about Adam Chidwick:

“Adam is the most promising apprentice I have ever worked with, and I say that having worked with some really good apprentices before now.

A newcomer to Amey, engineering and railways in 2019, Adam has brought a can-do approach to our team. We have been delivering a tricky project on a tight deadline and Adam has brought fresh thinking to the way we manage and deliver engineering designs.

Working as the only junior member of a small and highly experienced team, Adam has created numerous innovations for keeping track of the many inputs into the project. His smart spreadsheets ensure we get it right without forgetting anything important. Every task has a clear owner and sign off procedure. He has also built 'power query' functionality into the system. This means that the project team can see at a glance where time is being spent, so lessons can be learned for the next project.

As well as his technical skills, Adam has brilliant people skills, managing to bring even the very senior team members on board with his innovations.

Even though Adam is fresh out of school and has no engineering training, he has an excellent grasp of the railway concepts we deal with. He is not afraid to ask questions and say when he thinks other engineers are incorrect. I am sorry to say he has often been right!

Adam has kept our project moving, identified technical bottlenecks and integrated our systems to make everything run more smoothly, all the while dragging us dinosaurs with him.

Finally, Adam has developed a way to save a large percentage of project time by integrating Google Earth into our plan production, saving many hours of dull, repetitive work for designers.

Adam's can-do attitude, enthusiasm, hard work, fresh thinking and technical skill have impressed me so much over just four months, I honestly think he should be the RailStaff Awards Apprentice of the Year.“

Said the following about Adam Chidwick:

“Adam has impressed everyone who he has collaborated with throughout my time at Amey.

I have had Adam work on numerous projects that I manage all of which have indeed been challenging, technical and delivered in line with a very tight and reactive programme.

Adam has shown dedication to the delivery of the project whilst being able to consider effects of other projects by managing his availability and prioritising deliverables.

With Adam being new into the Rail Industry he has picked up vital design knowledge extremely quickly and implemented it into his day to day work. Adams strong understanding and lack of hesitation to challenge has seen him lea design review meetings with clients.

My colleagues and I strongly believe he should be the RailStaff Awards Apprentice of the Year.“
