The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Amaan Shaban

Said the following about Abdul Rehman Savant:

“I have had the pleasure to have Abdul Rehman Savant as my line manager as he understands what it is like to be an apprentice in the engineering industry and provides constant support and guidance throughout my apprenticeship. In the early stages of my apprenticeship I had been placed on furlough and I was worried about my role at SYSTRA Ltd. Abdul understood that and had gone above and beyond throughout my time on furlough, providing me with reading materials, videos, CPD invitations and training to help build my knowledge because that’s the type of leader that he is.

Abdul has a positive attitude when it comes to helping others, he organises CPD workshops so that we can learn about the new innovations in the rail industry and has not allowed the COVID pandemic to stop this by organizing the workshops over Microsoft Teams.

I have had the opportunity to work on Signalling Power Distribution Projects with Abdul. It has been challenging with my limited knowledge, but Abdul had constantly held team meetings, one to one sessions to help ensure that we all know what we are doing. If there were any problems Abdul would resolve them and help ensure that we would meet our deadlines. Abdul would sit in teams meetings on mute so that if we need help he can be there for us, as this COVID situation has required us to work from home.

Abdul has recently been given the role of Professional Head of Discipline (E&P/M&E) and this has come with more responsibility but it has not stopped him from constantly checking on his team’s wellbeing and workload. Abdul is a true leader and an inspiration to us all.“

Said the following about Abdul Rehman Savant:

“Firstly, I want to explain how mine and Abduls paths first crossed and how we became colleagues. Abdul joined Amey back in November 2017 as a Senior Engineer and quickly started checking some of my design work I was undertaking at the time. Straight away, Abdul gave me so much respect and so much praise for the work I gave him, which at that time in my career, I really needed that positivity to help motivate myself with my work and career. Following this, the future years working with Abdul, he has done nothing but push me and inspire me to become the best engineer I can. He not only helped me with my career but also the life advice he gave me back then has been a contributing factor to my life now, becoming a very motivated individual who strives to become better each and every day. Unfortunately Abdul left the business in December 2019.

Abdul left to become a Principal Electrical Design Engineer/Manager for TSP Projects and soon became the Professional Head of Discipline under Systra Ltd. Abdul then contacted me during Covid to ask if I would be interested in an opportunity as an E&P Engineer with him as my manager. Straight away the answer was yes, as my past experience with him was fantastic and wanted to work for Abdul again as I knew what Abdul brings and the progression I can achieve under his mentorship.

Since re-joining Abdul my career has been excelled tremendously and this is all down to the respect and mentorship Abdul has given me. Abdul will always put myself and the team first ensuring the moral and team energy is always high. He is a constant drive to make sure myself and the team are doing the best we possibly can, pushing us to take more responsibility in project work and pushing us to achieve professional registration. Abdul has built a fantastic diverse group of individuals whom all look forward to each day we start work. Abduls approach to line management is faultless, there is no seniority and no hierarchy, and he treats everyone as equals.

This is why I believe Abdul deserves this award.“
