Said the following about Sheldon Roberts:

“At 16:50 the Station, on a platform, a member of staff became aware of an intoxicated passenger who he felt was behaving suspiciously. The member of staff signalled for assistance, whilst bringing the passenger a cup of water. Sheldon’s colleague Eric established that the passenger was a potential suicide risk due to various statements he made alluding to him wanting to end his life.

Sheldon immediately contacted the British Transport Police (BTP) whilst making his way over to platform 4 to assist Eric. Sheldon engaged with the passenger and relieved Eric; allowing him to continue to with his station duties.

Sheldon established a rapport with the passenger, sat and spoke with him about his problems. The passenger reiterated that he felt suicidal and that he could fold at any moment. Sheldon felt it would be best to continue their conversation away from the station to minimise the suicidal risk. The passenger opened up to Sheldon and informed him that he was homeless but had a job that he needed to get to shortly.

Sheldon managed to coax him out of the station with the promise of food and a coffee. Sheldon took the passenger to the local supermarket where they were later met by BTP who then took charge of the situation.

The station team at West Croydon worked together with great professionalism and efficiency, allowing Sheldon to take the time to recognise the warning signals, act and save a passengers life.“
