Said the following about Sam Rickman:

“On two occasions in the last year Sam has, with the support of his colleagues, intervened where he has been concerned that people have intended to take their own lives.

On the first occasion he approached a man on a platform who began crying when Sam spoke with him. He noticed that the man had medical garments on underneath his clothes and during a conversation that lasted approximately 40 minutes he used the skills that he had learned on the Samaritans Managing Suicidal Contacts course to get the man away from immediate danger and to keep him talking while further help arrived.

On the second occasion he, with two other colleagues, became aware of a commotion on board a train where a distressed woman was insisting that she intended to kill herself. They were able to get her off the train and safely outside of the station where once again they were able to continue to engage with her until the BTP arrived to take her for further assessment.

Like all his colleagues in the Railway Enforcement Officer team Sam is committed to the effort to support vulnerable people across our network and these two instances are good examples of the very real difference he has made to people's lives.“
