Said the following about Kieran Forde:

“Kieran was instrumental in helping to prevent a suicide just outside the station on the 6th June 2017. Kieran heard a train horn sounding and noticed a MOP standing very near to the open line. The train was so close that Kieran actually looked away to avoid witnessing the accident, when he looked back he saw the MOP still standing very close to the line.

Kieran was at the access gate (road side) and asked the Member of Public to come away from the line edge, at which point he could see that the MOP was very drunk. Kieran then advised a colleague (Ground Control) to call BTP immediately. The MOP tried to walk off but Kieran stayed with the MOP and asked him to go back to his own car for a chat. Kieran gave the MOP some food and water whilst reassuring him until BTP police arrived, to take the suicidal person to hospital for medical assistance.

Kieran’s line manager (Matt Harrison) went to see Kieran on site and put him on the train home (Exeter) and drove his car back to Swindon. Matt also contacted Validium and has provided Kieran with the associated information and links. The Ground Control colleague was also relieved of duties for the day.

Personally I believe both members of staff have acted in a very professional manor and shown real empathy for the individual who will now get the help he needs. In addition I am really proud to see members of the team looking out for each other. Although Kieran repeatedly stated he was fine the mental 'internal video replay' can creep up on you. Kieran’s line Manager took a precautionary view and arranged for him to get home safely – considering his lack of concentration/distracted etc. -as a result of preventing a suicide attempt. Kieran's actions not only prevented a suicide, but also prevented the repercussions of the physiological impact to the Train Driver, himself and colleagues on site post a suicide.

Kieran should be recognised for his compassion and rippling effects his actions had. Kieran is a construction Managers for Western Works Delivery.“
