“As part of GTR's response to the Covid-19 shutdown we established a satellite CCTV monitoring suite at East Croydon to enhance our current CCTV monitoring ability. The people who staff this suite have the remit to monitor live CCTV at Stations across the whole GTR network looking out for:
• Signs of vandalism
• Youths congregating & loitering at stations
• ASB
• Signs of Vulnerable people on the station. Things to watch out for are:
People loitering for long periods of time on the station
People waiting at far ends of platforms or areas where people don’t normally wait
People who are displaying signs of emotionally upset
• Any hazards or risks to people welfare
• Liaise with appropriate authorities/stakeholders BTP, REOs. CCTV
Incident Controllers, GTR Control
• Instigate Long Line PA announcements via Customer Ambassadors as required
• Maintain daily log of notably events and stations monitored
What makes this team unique, is that they are all volunteers who have put themselves forward to staff this facility whilst being stood down from their normal role. Between them they have almost achieved 24/7 coverage.
Each member of the team cares passionately about our railway, and are doing there bit to keeping the railway safe. To give one example of this: Since April 23rd the team have followed up on 127 reports of vulnerable people, of which 9 required some form of intervention following calls made by the team, possibly 9 lives saved.
The team members are:
