Said the following about Andrew Ashton:

“While on duty as a Mobile Operations Manager Andy was asked to attend a station near Leeds following a report of a suicidal male.

Andy arrived on site at 0648hrs and immediately assessed that the male was inebriated and a danger to himself and passing trains. Andy engaged the male in conversation and ascertained that he was suicidal. Andy was aware that BTP had been summoned and continued to buy time by talking about a variety of subjects. It was soon established that he had suffered a bereavement of his mother and son and at this point broke down in tears. Andy somehow managed to dissuade him from doing the inevitable until BTP arrived and he was then was safely escorted from the station.

Throughout this incident Andy was able to keep NR Control updated on events, enable trains to continue running albeit under caution and maintain dialogue with the person in what was clearly a stressful situation for not only those involved but for other customers on the station. Andy demonstrated a number of personal skills in dealing with this incident and was able to implement the Samaritan training that he had previously received.“
