Nominations for Apprentice of the Year

Tim McCarthy

Said the following about Tom Moseley:

“I am nominating Tom as he is always professional, diligent, hardworking, positive and a great team member and his attitude to learning and studying is positive and open-minded.

Tom is undertaking a new railway apprenticeship based in the Control at the Rail Operations Centre at Three Bridges which is being delivered by the Institution of Railway Operators (IRO). As an apprentice in Network Operations, Tom has had the opportunity to learn in the operational hub of the railway. The fast paced and supportive environment at Three Bridges ROC has already allowed him to see the many parts of the railway as a whole and Tom will tell you that he has met a multitude of highly skilled and inspirational people along the way. Tom joined GTR in July 2018 after more than a decade in retail and IT roles, having never quite found the right position or company to suit him. Understanding that working on the railway takes knowledge, dedication and tenacity Tom decided to join through the apprenticeship scheme to achieve this goal and knowing that when a permanent role within the business arose, he would be fully equipped to do the best job possible and become a valuable member of the GTR Team. Within the apprenticeship there is a huge emphasis on building relationships and meeting people and Tom has been proactive enough to embark on site visits all across the GTR network. From a day with colleagues at Bedford Station to testing a train simulator with driver instructors at Selhurst Depot Tom has gained a real perspective of the colleagues he now works with and supports from the Control Centre. Tom has also benefitted from spending a day with a Network Rail Mobile Operations Manager, showcasing the vital interconnection GTR share with other companies and organisations to deliver the highest standards to our passengers. Tom expressed an interest in shadowing the Train Services Manager’s Role which was set up for him and following this he completed his 12 weeks of training and passed out in this role. Subsequent to that a vacancy arose which Tom applied for and he was successful in securing a permanent position with the Control Team as Train Service Manager for the Thameslink North Desk.

Tom continues to work towards completing his IRO Apprenticeship which should be early in 2020. Feedback from the IRO and his tutors has been excellent as Tom is completely committed to and engaged with the Apprenticeship programme. Tom will achieve a nationally recognised accreditation from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 3 Diploma in Principles of Management & Leadership when he completes his studies next year.“
