Nominations for Apprentice of the Year

Jason Edwards

Said the following about Timothy Hines:

“JUSTIFICATION

Tim has developed into an extremely skilled team member throughout his apprenticeship. This has been down to the quite outstanding attitude he has for learning. He has throughout his apprenticeship shown a dedication and passion to not only learning but the application of his new skills.

Throughout his Apprenticeship Tim, through his own drive, has ensured that he has been involved in all areas of Train Maintenance. Through his keen attitude and hardworking ethos Tim has marked himself out as a very competent team member who has gained the professional trust from his peers and Managers.

An example of how Tim has progressed is when he took the lead to support a small project that we were struggling to resource. The engineering team required a quantity of traction motors to be stripped and components removed for engineering investigation. Fuelled by the challenge Tim set about organising the team of fellow apprentices to start the work. Tim's skills that he had learnt saw him lead safely on all lifting operations, organise the method in how the team would carry this work out and ensured its timely completion. The completion of this work enabled the offsite engineering evaluation of traction motor bearings to be carried out. The huge potential savings for the life extension on traction motors was down to the evaluation that was successfully supported by Tim's drive and determination.

OPENING STATEMENT

Since joining the company as an Apprentice in Aug 2016, Tim has become a very capable, well liked and extremely trusted employee. Tim for a young man demonstrates real team spirit in all the tasks he takes on. His complete and utter passion for all aspects of train maintenance and operations have seen him participate with great enthusiasm in his day to day activities.

Whilst Tim surpasses all expectations on what he should be achieving for an Apprentice he constantly takes the time to mentor and support junior apprentices in the business. This is again a true mark of his ability and willingness to work as a team. Tim through his own request has been progressing the route to become a STEM Ambassador. This is wholly appropriate as he is a constant support to STEM visits to the depot and offsite visits to promote STEM activities.

Not satisfied with achieving and completing his Apprenticeship Tim has been a supporting member of charitable events. His support in the charity work carried out at Llangollen Railway and Ashton Hayes Village School have been quite inspirational. He demonstrates a true enthusiasm to all tasks that he takes on whether work or charity related.

Tim has applied himself completely to the academic content of his apprenticeship. This has seen him regularly receive distinctions in all of his work. Again not content with achieving his own academic requirements he has supported the junior apprentices with guidance and practical demonstrations.

SUPPORTING STATEMENTS

Andrew Caiger, Alstom:

Tim has always been an absolute pleasure to have within by BWS team. For a young apprentice he brings a level of competence and professionalism rarely seen in someone within an apprenticeship. His safe and target driven attitude make him an asset to my team when he is placed with me. He is always willing to support and, in many occasions, take the lead to complete tasks. He has without a shadow of a doubt embraced his learning and can apply his skills to a quite impressive standard. Having worked with Tim many times over his apprenticeship he demonstrates all the safety, quality, trust and honesty that Alstom embrace as a company.“
