Said the following about Matthew Thomas:

“Great Western Railway (GWR) is one of the biggest rail franchises in the UK, part of the First Group of companies, operating the Western network since 1996, rebranding ourselves as GWR in 2015. We employ over 6000 people across our network and we carry more than one and a half million customers over two million single journeys on 10,000 services every week. People are at the heart of our business and our ethos is that we are 'greater together'.

Matt was working 2K43 from one station to another when he spotted a trespasser on the track. Having used the horn to warn the person and they did not move clear, Matt brought his train to an immediate stop just short of where they were stood. Matt left his cab to find an extremely distressed young girl who was intent on committing suicide. While Matt returned to the train to appraise the guard and the controlling signaller of the situation, the girl walked away along the track.

Matt ran along the track to stop her and with some gentle persuasion managed to get her safely onto his train. Matt's guard Gary Kimpton stayed with the girl while Matt spoke to the signaller and the AOM aware. During the next few minutes the young girl began to self harm with a blade she had on her person, both Matt and Gary managed to disarm her and restrain her before bandaging the girls wounds and stopping the bleeding. Shortly after the transport police arrived to take care of the young lady.“
