The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Jenny Ericson

Said the following about Danielle Johnson:

“I would like to nominate Marianna for Rail Manager of the Year because she has supported me through a massive career change, which could have been an extremely daunting and scary experience as I was completely new to the railway.

Marianna made me feel welcome and supported from day one and ensured I had everything I needed to embark on the trainee driver course. During my training she dealt with any queries or problems promptly and effectively, meaning I could progress smoothly through the course.

I feel Marianna goes above and beyond to support her trainees - she even contacted me in her own time the Sunday before my ICA to give me a pep talk to calm my nerves and she continued to check on my progress throughout the ICA week.

Marianna is very approachable, has a great sense of humour and really makes her trainees feel valued and supported. This is such a refreshing change from the managers I have experienced in my previous career!“

Richard Curtis

Said the following about Danielle Johnson:

“Marianna is the most lovely manager ever she always has time for everyone and she is always happy and smiling which gives us all a lift early shifts or late. Marianna looks after the new trainee drivers and they always are saying in the mess rooms how she has helped them with not only there routes and driving instructors but also with personal stuff for getting days off. I always receive emails off Marianna about how my trainee is doing which is great feedback for me to know. I myself have needed items of equipment and Marianna will go out of her way all the time to deliver for me and all of us at Epsom she’s a lovely lady and I really hope she gets credit where needed we love her.“

Richard Marsh

Said the following about Danielle Johnson:

“After the sudden passing of my mother whilst I was a trainee driver, Marianna was absolutely instrumental in keeping me at the company. She went far above her role and far above most humans to make sure I was supported and had everything I needed to get back to work, she would spend her own time to sit with me whilst I spoke about my mother and I never ever felt it was forced or an inconvenience. Those few months were the best piece of management and kindest act of humanity I’ve ever personally had.

I have now qualified as a train driver and Marianna still asks how I’m doing, and always answers any questions that I have. I would not be a train driver if it wasn’t for her.“

Laura McDonald

Said the following about Danielle Johnson:

“I want to nominate Marianna, because this woman ALWAYS goes above and beyond to help you all she can.

I had Marianna as a Line Manager when I was a Trainee Driver, and she could never do enough for me.

She really looked after me when my Grandmother died. I was 'off track' when I damaged my achilles tendon (as a trainee) - and I was so worried about my job, because I was so new, as I was off track for 5 weeks, but she made sure I was okay.

Although Marianna isn't my manager anymore, she still really looks out for me - she'll send the odd text or email asking if I'm okay, which is so nice, because she doesn't have to.

Not only this - she's amazing, because, not only is she the Line Manager to all the trainees within Southern - she is a Mental Health First Aider within our large depot, and organised for train Depots and stations to have defibrillators, and briefs people on how to use them.

Marianna is just a breath of fresh air. You always leave after seeing her, with a massive smile and a sore tummy from laughing!

She is well deserving of this nomination and award.“

Marcus Gilbert

Said the following about Danielle Johnson:

“Marianna constantly goes above and beyond for her trainee drivers. If management performance was measured by gifts received from her drivers Marianna would win this competition hands down. I've never seen a manager thanked so often, thanked so sincerely, and make the biggest difference for those that need her help.“

Shaun Gillman

Said the following about Danielle Johnson:

“I would love to nominate Marianna Busuttil for Rail Manager of the year award because she really deserves it!

She was my manager whilst I was training to be a train driver and she was absolutely amazing! Nothing was too much trouble, if I contacted her about something however trivial she would get straight back to me, even if she was on her day off or on holiday.

She always goes above and beyond and will still help me out with anything even though she is no longer my manager. She is such a lovely person as well, the perfect manager I believe.

I cannot think of a more deserving person to win this award and I am not the only one who would be amazed if she doesn’t win it.“

Lisa Gibbs

Said the following about Danielle Johnson:

“Marianna is a fantastic Line Manager she has been so supportive during my train driving training. She has helped me through a difficult time that l had to deal with and Marianna gave me so much support and kept me so positive that l would get through the training while dealing with the difficult time.

Whenever l go to see Marianna she always has time for me and she has helped me to keep on track with my training. I have had many jobs in my career due to my age and l have never come across a Manager like Marianna her support her knowledge and her professionalism is astounding.“
