“Joint nomination for Rakeem Harvey and Lorenz Dougherty for using instinct and quick thinking to save a life
On the afternoon of 30th May Rakeem was working a station when he spotted a young male on the opposite platform who was sitting on the edge of the platform with his legs dangling.
Rakeem called over to his colleague Lorenz, who at the time was helping a passenger in a wheelchair. Seeing the young man in a vulnerable position and knowing there was a train due shortly, Lorenz took the decision to leave the passenger he was helping and ran over to the visibly distressed young man. Having reached him, Lorenz tried to talk him away from the platform edge but he did not respond.
Lorenz then wrapped his arms around the man and dragged him away from the edge, missing an approaching train by seconds.
Speaking after the event, Lorenz said he found out the man was in his early-20s, so they were of a similar age and he just acted instinctively as he knew a fast train was due.“
