Said the following about Gavin Jones:

“Gavin is without a doubt one of our most valuable players within the business, always switched on, always championing not only his team but also the business and always keen to lend a hand and put himself forward for causes he is passionate about. He plays a major role in supporting young talent within the business, being a mentor and taking on the role of mental health first aider. There is no end to his determination and drive and he is an inspiration to all who work for, and with him. He champions gender diversity within the industry, supporting events to empower women in rail and promotes the philosophy that improving gender diversity should be a priority for everyone within the industry.

As Head of Signalling, Gavin has a responsibility to develop his team but the work he does goes over and above the remit of a ‘manager’. Whilst managing a busy team and leading multiple projects he is also a dedicated family man who leads by example and whilst juggling a hectic work life balance, he found time to successfully undertake and compete a part time MBA and encouraged others within his team to undertake further development opportunities.

Once an apprentice himself, his appreciation of the importance of developing the next generation means he tirelessly supports schools and colleges to educate and inspire young people about the opportunities within rail. Gavin’s understated determination and drive to work to close the skills gap within the industry is an inspiration. He plays a pivotal role in supporting the recruitment process for all Colas Rail Early Career programmes and shares his wealth of experience to ensure that those looking to join have an in-depth understanding of the industry.

This drive to develop people in his teams is infectious and demonstrates how the work of one person has a ripple effect on those around them. His positive influence radiates through the trainees, graduates and apprentices within his teams who not only carry on his work with local schools, colleges and careers events but who have also won safety, sustainability and innovation awards, proving that the next generation of engineers are fundamental to providing innovation and shaping the rail industry of tomorrow.“
