“I would like to nominate the Fleet and Engineering planning team within Network Rail, because they have consistently demonstrated dedication, determination and effective communication in delivering an outstanding service for our frontline staff. Our frontline staff are the often-unseen workforce who renew miles of track each year, mostly at night. The planning team is responsible for rostering around 370 staff across the network to meet the changing and bespoke requirements of the Fleet and Engineering core plant and OTM (On Track Machine) resources.
The planning team started the year with a number of undocumented working practices, unresolved industrial relations issues and lack of focus, due to a legacy bias towards volume rather than people. They positively engaged with change to ensure early adoption of the fatigue standard, thus providing a greater work life balance for our staff. They increased focus on providing the best possible accommodation and travel arrangements for our staff, the majority of whom work away from home, sometimes for long periods of time.
In addition, the planning team is committed to improving the wellbeing not only of each other, but of all the staff they support. This journey is still ongoing, but the team has embraced its mission to improve, promote and foster resilience as much as delivery.“
