Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Sally Ralston

Said the following about Deborah Warham:

“Deborah came into the revenue protection department during a time of change and restructuring.

She led and implemented a massive and much needed change within the department.

Deborah then started to set high but realistic targets. She ensured that safety and staff wellbeing was always at the forefront of any task or instruction. She had said from the very beginning that she wanted the revenue protection department to succeed to a very high standard in all areas. This must include staff morale, staff wellbeing, customer service and productivity.

Deborah appointed each Lead Inspectors tasks and then supported them to meet the given target. She gave a high level of support always and where possible this support was also given to each Revenue Protection Officer to provide support and increase productivity.

As a result of these changes the revenue protection department is a very different place to work now. The team all understand their role and how that role plays out within Merseyrail. There is a greater sense of team work which has helped across all areas. For example providing extra support to stations/staff when needed and building better relationships with BTP and other agency’s that play a massive role in keeping the revenue on the network and keeping our customers safe.

The revenue protection department can now show its real worth within Merseyrail. This would not have been possible to achieve or maintain without a resourceful manager supporting the staff. Day to day as an RPO can be very difficult and stressful at times. There can be multiple stressful, aggressive and even violent interactions each day. Deborah is well aware that her team could also have stressful or upsetting times in their personal lives which they keep hidden or under control while carrying out their role. Without this support from Deborah some would struggle to carry out their roles.“
