Duncan Claber

Said the following about Dan Wilkes:

“Dan Wilkes is a Guard based at London Waterloo and over the past year has been involved in two serious incidents. In responding to these incidents, he has shown a true dedication to safety.

The first incident he was involved in, was a train derailment at Wimbledon. He assisted the train crew to deal with what was a very serious incident and ensured that South Western Railway’s customers and colleagues remained safe at all times. Dan helped manage the incident and offered valuable assistance to the crew on duty as well as the emergency services on the scene.

Another incident Dan helped respond to was when the train he was working on caught fire at Surbiton. Dan immediately used his training to bring the service to a safe stand and isolated the traction current. He also ensured passengers were safe by moving them away from the fire and checking for any injuries. All passengers were subsequently safely evacuated from the train. Despite this, Dan still delivered great customer service to those customers who have been on board. Customers on board the train at the time, later wrote into South Western Railway to thank him for his quick thinking and actions that made them all safe. They praised him for regularly checking on their welfare as well as keeping them up to date on the incident.

Dan’s calm and measured approach ensured the safety of numerous customers, and his professionalism reflects the high standards of training all South Western Railway staff receive.“
