Nominations for Apprentice of the Year

Said the following about Beth Flanagan:

““Beth joined Arup in June 2017 as a Design Apprentice in our Manchester Office. Beth was an experienced COSS, who worked previously in the LNW North area. She had obviously learned a lot prior to joining Arup as she demonstrated excellent COSS/SWL1 skills and exhibited a high level of confidence and safety culture.

Very early in her Arup career, Beth made it clear she had an interest in supporting the Rail Safety team with her in depth site experience and rule book knowledge.

Beth initially joined the Rail Safety Team as a rail safety advisor, working under the close supervision of an Associate Engineer and her rail safety coordinator colleagues. Beth demonstrated a willingness and ability to undertake many safety tasks which were far more than expected of someone at her age and grade level. In September 2019 Beth took the position of Rail Safety Co-ordinator for Arup’s Liverpool and Manchester Offices, report ing directly to Arup’s 3 Rail Safety Managers. Despite her young age, she has continually demonstrated an ability and maturity to easily handle situations which are not always straightforward. She is always willing to challenge poor behaviours and sets an excellent example for people all around her in the office and when she is attending site in a SWL/COSS capacity or as a designer.

I have had the pleasure of being in workgroups led by Beth, where she demonstrated her ability to control groups of designers and contractors with ease. She can recognise problem areas and ensure the situations are dealt with safely and without causing upset or bad feeling with those on site, and she always delivers good detailed site briefings.

Beth has been working on her professional qualifications while undertaking her many roles within Arup. Earlier this year, she achieved a double distinction for her NVQ in Engineering, completing her course in 2 years instead of 3. As well as her NVQ studies, Beth has completed and submitted her EngTech application, which at the time of this nomination is still under review. She has also successfully completed her IOSH managing safely course, which compliments her current rail safety coordinator role.

Beth has performed various roles within Arup as a Apprentice/Technician, alongside various different disciplines within the Arup design function. This includes Project Management, Permanent Way, Overhead Line Engineering, and CAD. Beth is currently managing multi-disciplinary surveys on Transpennine Route Upgrade and Liverpool Central Station projects.““

Said the following about Beth Flanagan:

“As Arup's local rail safety manager I had the pleasure of participating in Beth's interview process. I was immediately amazed at how confident she was and her personality was endearing too. Due to her having an existing COSS competency I was interested in how she maintains a safe system of work on site with large working groups and I also quizzed her on behavioural safety. She answered everything so confidently and it was evident how natural and mature her safety culture was too.

Beth works extremely well with myself and our United Kingdom India Middle East and Africa rail safety team, and our North West and Yorkshire region rail interfacing projects are benefitting from her involvement with site coordination, risk assessment and controller of site safety activities on a daily basis.

Beth recently completed her Level 3 Rail Engineering Technician Apprenticeship and achieved Engineering Technician (EngTech) status with the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Beth continues to impress after two successful years at Arup and she has a great future ahead of her.“
