“His calm and quiet demeanour helped to save a life
At just after midnight on 18 June, Anthony was contacted by the signaller to advise of a distressed female at the station who was suicidal. As Anthony approached he spotted a distressed person walking on the ballast towards his train. He bought his train to a stand and contacted the signaller to arrange for an emergency switch off.
The distressed female walked up to the train and Anthony started a conversation. He was concerned she was wandering further along the track and getting close to the third rail, so to distract her he opened his cab door and continued to talk to her in a calm manner.
He was able to find out her name and information about her situation and did a fantastic job in preventing her from walking further up the track. Using his calm and quiet demeanour he managed to keep the female talking for close to 20-minutes, until police and staff arrived to take care of her, before resuming the service.“
