Nominations for Train Driver of the Year

Stephen Mcfarlane

Said the following about William Gillett:

“Having worked at Merseyrail from boy to man few people can say on Merseyrail they've never heard of Billy. He is the most committed, passionate person I have met on the railway. If you have a question ask Billy and he'll answer if he can't he'll find it for you. He is nearing his retirement now and will be missed by all on Merseyrail. A true railway man who is proud to be in an industry he loves. A real gentleman who I and am sure everyone at Merseyrail will admit has been a pleasure and honour to work with. Working in a leader drivers role you can see the pleasure he gains from passing on his many years of experience and knowledge. I for one feel this award is deserved for his dedication and his contribution to the industry.“

Said the following about William Gillett:

“Billy - What can I tell you about Leader Driver Billy Gillett to make him worthy of this award that's going to make you understand just how much of an asset he is to us traincrew on Merseyrail, based at Birkenhead Central.

Billy always laughing, smiling and so engaging. He's a fountain of knowledge and someone who is highly respected and admired by all.

He lives and breathes his position and takes it extremely seriously, he proud of what he achieves and totally excels at his leader driver post.

Old hands and new staters alike use his techniques and more often that not you'll hear a discussion that ends in 'Billy said'. That's because he really does know so much and if he doesn't know it, he'll find out and share the information will us all.

He has many a saying from 'notch 2, pinch 2 to 22' (speed leaving Birkenhead Park), 254 on the floor, 256 in the sticks (signal numbers for gpls at Hooton) and of course his 'Fat Toads Can't Swim Easy Mate' (the first letter represents the start of each road/foot crossing name on the down West Kirby line).

You can't help but smile when you hear his name, he is genuinely one of the most amazing career railwaymen that you could meet. He's interested, informative and passionate about all the trainees he trains and wants them to enjoy their time 'on the grid'.

I can't say he's done something particularly well or excelled at anything in general - he's just so talented at everything he sets out to do. Whether it be safety briefs, training his trainees, nurturing existing drivers or developing his own techniques he truly is a remarkable man who in a few years is going to be sadly missed by us at BC.“
