The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Team of the Year

Glen Merryman

Said the following about Stevenage Supervisors:

“This senior team and Stevenage station play a key role in the GTR franchise and they continue to move forward, strengthening themselves with each quarterly group meeting with enthusiasm and constructive solutions.

They work tirelessly to assist all our stakeholders, resolve staffing issues, proactively handle disruption issues & are our oracle and support mechanism to our smaller stations on the Great Northern route.

They are ever willing to support training, new starters and guide agency staff.

Their insight is also essential in supporting Control and the Ops departments. The commitment shown has raised the bar for front line teams; the ownership they take should be commended, without this we could not deliver to such a high level.

Outstanding personal contributions are made in handling customer care, assisting mobility restricted travellers and respectfully intervening with vulnerable passengers or managing conflictive situations. Empathy and determination should be included in the job description for them! This team make the job look easy - which we all know it is not.

The uniqueness of this station, with island platforms on the East Coast Main Line and other TOC operators requires a tireless work ethic to keep trains running on the Great Northern. These Supervisors are the backbone and they should be proud of how they deliver daily.

There work has really paid off recently when they won a Pride of Stevenage award from Stevenage Borough Council. They received this award in recognition to their service to the local community and beyond. It goes without saying you don’t win Council awards unless you are doing a really great job, this team truly care about their station and the local area. It is another example of how this team has a real pride and ownership for their supportive role, helping to ensure that Stevenage station continues to be the gateway hub for the local community.

This is a massive a achievement and it goes without saying the team should be recognised. The award would not have been won had it not been for the commitment of a small team of supervisors, led by Liz Mead the station Manager.

Being the hub of the local community is a true achievement; the station also holds links in with the Princes Trust charity who has a regional office across the road from the station. Every three months this team support young people who have undertaken a "Get into Railways" training course to have an opportunity to spend two weeks on the station being mentored- They do this three times a year with 10 young people. This truly is a remarkable team, who not only take pride in running a train service, offering great customer service they are also supporting the local community.

These supervisors are so proud of what they are achieving with GTR and keep putting back into their local community and local staff teams.“
