Nominations for Rail Engineer of the Year

Geoff Broadhead

Said the following about Stephen Varley:

“Steve is an exceptional engineer who has really impressed me this year particularly in the way he led the team as DPE and Track PE on the recent Newark Flat Crossing renewal.

This was a first in type renewal and CSM significant project which required Product Acceptance for the 8 Double star cast manganese crossings mounted on FFU bearers.

Throughout this year Steve has also given mentorship and support to the 2 new DPE's who have joined the team. He is very approachable and always steps up to any tasks thrown his way.“

Moneeb Saqlain

Said the following about Stephen Varley:

“Steve is an extremely hardworking professional engineer and regularly leads complex projects. Recently Steve led the bespoke renewal at Newark Flat crossing, from design through to delivery. This involved the introduction of composite, fibre-reinforced foamed urethane bearers.

Steve is always willing to share best practices, frequently mentors developing engineers and is highly respected amongst colleagues. Through showing tremendous work ethic along with a positive can-do attitude, Steve excels in any challenge that comes his way.“

Dan Greenwood

Said the following about Stephen Varley:

“Steve Varley is an excellent track engineer, he consistently demonstrates technical and risk based engineering judgement, attention to detail as well as leadership in challenging situations.

Successful project engineering for Network Rail involves a range of skills both technical and foreseeing risks and opportunities, Steve is highly skilled in all of these. Steve has undertaken project engineering duties on some of the most complex and challenging renewals project this year including Newcastle South Junction, Derby Remodelling and Leeds Station Enhancements and I can say that Steve has been a massive factor in the success of these complex works.

His ability to foresee issues and then problem solve them quickly and efficiently is of great value. He also communicates information very well with people of all levels, ensuring accuracy and consistency across Network Rail, Design and Construction staff.

Above and beyond what may be considered his ‘day job’, during an extended period of my unplanned medical leave, Steve stepped up to cover a substantial part of my role during a difficult and challenging time. I appreciated this support and know that our engineering projects continued to be delivered safely and successfully as a result of this.

Steve has in recent times successfully gained his Eng Tech professional accreditation and is close to securing his Incorporated Engineering status. Engineer of the Year would be a fitting accolade for an extremely talented Engineer.“

Martin Womack - **HAS LEFT**

Said the following about Stephen Varley:

“Steve is an engineer that goes that extra mile. As well as undertaking the role as a project engineer for the S&C domestic renewals schemes within the Central Rail Systems Alliance he has also been supporting me on the Leeds Capacity Project too. He has worked collaboratively with the design team to ensure that the designs have been delivered efficiently and going that extra mile with providing support where required. I have worked alongside Steve for over 4 years and this is what he does on a day to day basis.

One great example of this for me was that Steve challenged the track categories detailed within the signed off AIP track designs. He sort agreement with the route that these could be changed which in turn not only providing a significant cost saving to Network Rail, it also reduced materials usage and deliveries to site providing further BREEAM points to support delivering a sustainable project.

Steve has always provided support to me on track issues and nothing is ever too much for him. He deserves to be recognised for all of his hard work within the rail industry.“
