He has now started on a new challenge in the Southeastern Route.

Twice a year the South East Route hold Safety Workshops with about 1500 of our frontline staff. I saw Simon in a part of the workshop measure up literally hundreds of our frontline teammates feet to make sure they had the right insoles and boots ... as he did it he talked passionately about they’re wellbeing, his belief being that if we care about them then they will be more likely to care about themselves. I am very proud to propose Simon for this award.“

“Simon has energised the entire safety function within the SE route, his energy to deliver safety improvement is absolutely unfaltering and permeates across the entire team, driving us to relentlessly deliver initiatives and derive new ideas at every opportunity, ranging from state of the art lace-free safety boots, mechanised stair-climber devices, culture change programmes, and a dedicated health & wellbeing clinic for staff.

His bravery in challenging unsafe behaviour is second to none to the extent that he has formally ‘quizzed’ the whole exec team on safety performance, where many others will have been too embarrassed or daunted to do so, helping to raise the bar for safety across the Route.

He is a real role model for safety.“
