The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Person of the Year

Katie Murphy

Said the following about Ryan Costello:

“Ryan has very recently been appointed to the role of Control Centre Manager (People), within this role it is his duty to ensure the Rail Service Delivery Team - of just under 50 people feel supported and cared for to ensure they are performing in their roles to the best of their ability. The team is made up of staff across 4 location, working in a wide variety of roles resulting in a team of people who couldn't be more different to each other. To take on such a challenge is a valiant move, but even more so when Ryan had previously worked within team, which is an incredibly difficult thing to do and do well. And yet Ryan is already tackling long standing issues that his colleagues have asked to be resolved, with great success.

He has worked many roles within the Train Service Delivery team since joining it at 18. He has matured as a man and rail person within that time. Overcoming many personal and professional challenges along the way. Yet he's determined to always outdo himself, work harder and be better. As a result of this he has recently achieved a degree in Railway Operations whilst working full time and being a dedicated father to his two young children.

There are many other highlights and trials that Ryan has achieved and overcome to be where he is and who he is today and yet he would argue he could always do better. It is this attitude along with his ability to be a strong, dedicated yet compassionate leader that compels me to nominate him for this award. I think any year in Ryan's career where he could be nominated for Rail Person of the year as his dedication to Railway Operations and now his staff makes him a fantastic champion for our industry.“
