The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Team of the Year

Tony Brindley

Said the following about Land Sheriffs:

““Land Sheriffs have been working with partners at a station on the network that has experienced a high level of suicidal activity over the years. Together with MTR, Samaritans and Network Rail, they came up with an idea to introduce a Safeguarding duty at the station, were someone is always present on one of the main line platforms while trains are in service.

Since the safeguarding duties were introduced we have successfully carried out a number of interventions at the station at that time. This is down to the great work the Land Sheriffs do in their duties manning our main line platforms, they are by no means the only people who do these duties we have MTR and STM staff and also our very own Safeguarding Ambassador who do their share of safeguarding duties, but the Land Sheriffs do the most of the shifts.

Since it has been introduced there have been over 30 plus interventions by all staff, I am sure you would agree, this seems to be a system that gets great results, due to the dedication of all staff involved especially the Land Sheriffs who have the most interventions in my opinion.

The other reason to nominate them is at all times they are making our safer place for staff and customers, they always seem to have everyone welfare of staff at the front of their minds, which I know from personal experience.

The Land Sheriffs do not get enough credit for the fantastic the do for us on the railway. And I think to mention at your awards night will go a little way of letting them know how much they are valued by our industry.”“
