Said the following about Gary James:

“Gary James is a Train Driver instructor and I feel that the instructors are the unsung heroes who need recognition of what they do which, while it is expected of them, they need to be acknowledged as it is a difficult task on so many levels.

It requires so many skills not just the over arching professional requirements of railway and driving knowledge; personal skills and non-technical skills that cannot be taught, it's something you have or you don't to be a 'good' instructor.

Dealing with being in charge of a huge piece of machinery while managing many different types of trainees at various stages. Showing compassion and patience and at the same time guiding without compromising safety or the confidence of the trainee.

Gary is the most knowledgeable colleague with vast experience with trains and everything that makes them work - or fail! He is passionate about what he does and gets a real buzz for himself when a trainee does well out there.

Alongside the training, Gary also has to juggle driving his own working shifts, so to maintain personal equilibrium at all times the way he does I think is almost superhuman.

As a trainee I came to appreciate the massive commitment of the instructors and Gary's is outstanding. E.g: His genuineness and care for the trainee is amazing. He went over and above to help me in my training and learning and I will always remember and appreciate this!

Gary above all else always has time for his colleagues in need, always the professional. I want to applaud Gary for his endless empathy, knowledge and compassion.“
