Said the following about Des Roy:

“Des Roy holds a pivotal role in the leadership team on the London Bridge Station Redevelopment (LBSR) contract, a large part of Network Rail’s Thameslink scheme. As Head of Safety, Health and

Environment (SHE) on this contract for Costain, Des leads both the SHE team and the operational team by inspiring exceptional performance. As a result of his direction and diligence, the team at

LBSR has achieved significant periods with very few injuries, including 8 million man hours without a RIDDOR accident which is an industry leading achievement.

The Costain behavioural safety programme has been implemented across the contract with all colleagues being involved in its theory and implementation. Des has cultivated behavioural safety in people’s mind-sets with the use of high impact drama based behavioural sessions for back to work campaigns and SHE impact days.

The sessions have had a lasting effect onsite as well as making the Evening Standard. This is a part of the tireless work that Des does to influence Safety culture and keep his colleagues free from harm.

Des and his team have consistently applied the requirements of the Costain SHE procedures to effectively manage safety and healthcare onsite. To elevate this approach Des is always to trial new and innovative products. One of the key items which has seen increased levels of Safety engagement onsite has been the installation of ‘close call stations’ Des worked with a technology company to tailor an existing software based reporting system into a capture tool that has yielded significant Safety reporting benefits for the contract doubling the level of engagement.

To deliver a scheme the size of London Bridge, reaching 150,000 man hours a month, with so little harm occurring to those that work on the project is a testament to Des’s ability.“
