Said the following about Chris Thompson:

“Chris played a key part in developing the Fast Trackers engineering challenge but my nomination is in support of his personal commitment in supporting one of the Fast Trackers students, who had been learning to cope with mental health issues. The young student openly shared her history of extreme anxiety and this was evidently an on-going battle for her and was hampering her engagement in the programme. One programme element required her to give a formal presentation, the thought of which terrified her and left her close to breaking down and visibly scared.

Chris went well beyond what might be expected and took the time to develop a supportive relationship with her on a one-to-one basis. He helped her in exploring a variety of coping strategies and to help her to conquer (or at least control) her anxiety and to give the presentation in front of a packed lecture theatre.

While other volunteers tried to engage to provide the support that was required, it was Chris who persevered and succeeded in developing the confidence she needed to deliver her presentation and to achieve her Industrial Cadets Gold Award.

Without doubt, it was Chris’ patience and perseverance that saw this bright and engaging young lady overcome her doubts and anxieties. I’m sure that the impact of his intervention will be a source of strength for her in the future and should be commended.“
