The RailStaff Awards 2024

Said the following about Ben Sutcliffe:

“Since Ben joined SNC-Lavalin, he has made a real difference to the business. Before his appointment in August 2015, the company used to rely heavily on recruitment agencies. Now we have Ben’s expertise in-house, we are able to decide which roles we want to recruit for ourselves, and which vacancies we require support with.

As UK Recruiter, Ben is the primary point of contact for all hiring managers within the Rail & Transit team in the UK, as well as all candidates within the region. Both internal staff and external candidates have praised Ben’s drive, professionalism and enthusiasm.

Ben’s skills have certainly been tested; for example, when the Interfleet business rebranded to SNC-Lavalin. Historically, Interfleet was better known than SNC-Lavalin in the UK, while the latter had huge brand awareness in North America (and in other regions). Ben played a key role in communicating the expanded career opportunities available to candidates as a result of the UK business fully integrating with its international parent company.

Thanks to these opportunities - and the company’s growth - Ben’s workload has increased dramatically since joining SNC-Lavalin. He recently took on an additional resource, who - I have no doubt - will go from strength to strength under Ben’s guidance.

The coming months will remain busy for Ben, with SNC-Lavalin working on high profile projects in the UK, which are likely to require additional resources. The company also recently acquired the Atkins business.

Whatever the future holds for Ben, I am confident that he will surpass all expectations. One of the best things about Ben is his desire for continual improvement. Shortly before he joined the company, the business held a recruitment evening to engage with potential candidates in Derby. This proved a success, so the senior management team decided to repeat the event in 2016 and gave Ben ownership of the project.

Under Ben’s management, the number of potential candidates attending the event increased by 60% in 2016, with the best candidates going on to secure permanent roles within the business. In 2017, Ben expanded the recruitment events to cover SNC-Lavalin’s regional office in Manchester, as well as the Rail & Transit head office in Derby.“
