Nominations for Rail Team of the Year

Said the following about Barrow in Furness Team Barrow in Furness Team:

“I would like to nominate 6 members of Barrow in Furness Platform Staff for the Team Award, who in the past few months have all worked above and beyond due to crisis situations in exceptional circumstances from flooding in the earlier part of the year to managing the station for our customers during industrial action and cancelled trains during the May timetable change issues.

These staff are the forefront for our customers at Barrow Station and the first port of call for all inquiries and complaints. They deal with issues way beyond their remit and they do this with immense professionalism and commitment.

During the past months Cumbria have had major issues due to the February flooding cutting Barrow off for hours from all areas and more recently due to the timetable change in May which caused major disruption to all the services in and out of Barrow. Each and every one of them dealt with each day on its own merit and they had to make instant decisions to keep our customers on the move either by replacement bus services or by taxis, during the floods neither of the aforementioned were applicable as the station area was cut off for hours. Staff then had to arrange hotel accommodation for customers unable to get home and this continued well into the early hours. They have had to deal with the media locally and nationally and also with the bad publicity that came with this. There professionalism shone through during these exceptional and difficult times and I was proud of all of them coming together as a team and dealing with issues way beyond what was expected of them and working long hours to help and assist each other.

Each day brings new issues and scenarios for them to deal with and I can honestly say that now the services are getting into recovery they still continue to help and assist each other on a day to day basis keeping professional and delivering excellent customer service whilst still doing their day job to which I must say has been to an exceptionally high standard.

The Barrow in Furness Team have proved that team work even under such crisis conditions brings together great camaraderie and I have never been so proud as when I was working with this team seeing them deliver the best service that they could under these challenging circumstances and without any complaint. Their commitment to the service of our customers and other staff is exemplary and should not go unnoticed and I would to nominate all 6 of them for the Team Award as recognition of their efforts and the pride I have in all of them during this time and continuing in the coming weeks.

The Team consists of Helen Atkinson, Ray Gilchrist, Ian Farrell, Tony Mulholland, Ben Murphy and Damian Plumb.“
