“On an afternoon in July 2018, Avril Sherris, Zoe Vale and Phil Mitchener approached a male after he had pressed the passcom on the train and then alighted the train at a station.
The male was very agitated, behaving erratically and was tearful. He spoke to Avril and Zoe and told her that he had recently lost his mum and had several other deaths in the family over recent years and now had no one left. As they were talking a fast train approached they had to physically restrain the male as he tried to jump down on the track, in the path of the on-coming train.
The intervention lasted around 45 minutes with the situation developing throughout, the team were able to keep the male safe even when they had to physically restrain him. They worked fantastically well together to control the situation until help arrived and the male was taken away by BTP colleagues.
Before leaving the scene the male thanked them for their concern and for talking to him.“
