Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Said the following about Andy Worrall:

“In 2017, as part of the creation of combined Freightliner UK Rail division, Andy Worrall was appointed to the new post of Locomotive and Control Manager. He was challenged with rationalising and restructuring Freightliner’s existing three Control Units based in London, Crewe and Ferrybridge and streamlining the Operations focus at point of delivery.

Andy took on this business critical project on top of his already demanding day job, necessitating him to spend large periods of his working week away from his home in Southampton as the new structure was bedded in.

Andy has led this pivotal change programme, which has resulted in a greater focus of the UK Rail Control function by separating locomotive control from the management of train running via the three previous Control Units being reduced to two. The London Control Unit is now responsible for managing the Freightliner locomotive fleet of 146 engines as a single entity and the Ferrybridge Control Unit now oversees the management of all UK Rail services from terminals / yards and during service perturbation on the network for Freightliner’s Intermodal and Heavy Haul (both bulk and infrastructure) services.

The closure of the Crewe Control Unit has resulted in the loss of some staff which Andy has managed with great care and sensitivity. He has also recruited and trained new staff for the Ferrybridge Control Unit as well as re-training existing staff in new skill sets – all within challenging timescales.

On top of all that, Andy has been instrumental in introducing and training the Control Unit team on a new, trailblazing RailSmart Control Log Module, used to record incidents. This new technology marks a significant milestone in Freightliner’s journey to become a modern, more efficient and safer organisation.

Andy’s hard work and whole-hearted dedication to this project has not only led to obvious resource efficiencies but has enabled Freightliner to be better placed to secure new business across all divisions going forward.“
