The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Engineer of the Year

David Rowlands

Said the following about Abdul Rehman Savant:

“Abdul joined the Amey Consulting design team in 2017 as a Senior Engineer. The Technical abilities and people management skills Abdul demonstrated, and willingness to rise to challenges immediately became apparent. Recognising Abduls unique skill set, resulted in him being afforded the opportunity to take on the role of Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) Design for a high profile, time constrained package of design work to introduce resilience to poorly performing signalling power assets on Midland Mainline between West Hampstead and St Albans.

Abdul has developed excellent collaborative relationships with the client, Network Rail Asset Engineer and Designated Project Engineer (DPE) whereby design solutions are being mutually developed.

The level of performance and maturity which Abdul demonstrates is at a level that would be expected of a Principal Engineer or Engineering Manager, with many years of Engineering experience, therefore I have no hesitation in nominating him or this award.“

Cameron O'Connell

Said the following about Abdul Rehman Savant:

“Abdul has been working as a mentor for the Amey consulting E&P team, he has invested his time by guiding myself and other junior members of the team on the East Midlands Signalling Power designs. Abdul has set achievable goals with the junior members of the E&P team to help them improve as engineers and give them confidence to become future leaders, as well as mentoring junior engineers, he is also in the process of helping fellow peers to attain the IEng and CEng status by giving up his time to make a better and more cohesive team. Abdul uses his knowledge of the railway and suppliers to bring innovation to enhance the railway. By being the first to bring in new equipment and utilising specialist equipment Abdul is single-handedly bringing the future of rail into the present. Abdul has used knowledge from signalling and from structures in which he has previously worked to brings disciplines together to ensure that designs work together seamlessly. Abdul is not only the great mentor that every young engineer needs, he is also someone who can take time out of his day to help anyone.

Abduls attention to detail is second to none, he makes sure that a design will be perfect and he will never miss a deadline. He is a great engineer and someone I look up to.“

Glen Wilbor

Said the following about Abdul Rehman Savant:

“I have worked with Abdul on the East Midlands Signalling Power Reliability Project. From the first day of working with Abdul, I have been extremely impressed with his professionalism, technical knowledge and the amount of effort he has put in to make the project a success. He is always the first person in the office and one of the last to leave, whilst doing his job, he is also taking the time to mentor 2 Apprentices.“

Lucy Macbeth

Said the following about Abdul Rehman Savant:

“Abdul is one of the first engineers I met after joining the rail industry a few years ago. He has rapidly progressed into his current role at Amey and I wasn't surprised when I found out - it is a very well-deserved career move. I feel his passion for the rail industry and his extensive knowledge show in all his work and his attitude towards clients/suppliers/customers alike is always positive and professional. The thing that stands out the most is Abdul's knowledge and focus on improving the railway in an innovative way. He doesn't shy away from thinking outside the box and bringing something new to the table. Abdul is a very talented engineer and his precision and attention detail are undeniable. He has worked hard in his career and thoroughly deserves recognition of his hard work by being nominated (and hopefully winning!) this award.“

Lewis Westbury

Said the following about Abdul Rehman Savant:

“We have been working with Abdul for just over 9 months on the design stage of the West Hampstead - St Pancras 650V renewals scheme. Abdul's attention to detail and willingness to collaborate has ensured that a robust set of designs will support the construction team in delivering a large section of upgrades on the busy route.

Collaboratively we have been looking at ways of using innovation for future projects that will undoubtedly aid Network Rail in its CP6 targets. Abdul's pro-active approach and aspiration to use innovation and challenge convention will allow him to go far in the industry.

It has been a pleasure working alongside Abdul in these early stages and look forward to working together to deliver many more many more successful projects.“

Andrew Grizzle

Said the following about Abdul Rehman Savant:

““Talent without hard work is nothing”- Cristiano Ronaldo. Therefore, I nominate Abdul Savant for Rail engineer of the Year. The project timescales, extremely challenging. The requirements, fluid. But Abdul as CRE and engineering lead on West Hampstead, a major signalling power project has led his talented young team to deliver an extraordinary level of work. Time and again he has applied extra effort beyond his remit to meet the client’s expectations. And where necessary explain that some expectations are unrealistic. More than this, he has gone out of his way with team activities such as arranging technical and sporting events. “We are managing people not just the process” he says.

Words like “safety”, “passion” and “integrity” are used daily in team briefs and company mission statements, but Abdul Savant lives them. Abdul has the power to do anything he wants in rail and beyond. A natural leader with a sporting analogy for every occasion. In my opinion is one of the best rail power engineers in the country.“

Jon Gormley

Said the following about Abdul Rehman Savant:

“"Abdul is a great asset to the rail industry who has a great depth of knowledge.

I have worked with Abdul on the East Midlands Signalling Power Reliability Project and West Hampstead Power upgrade works where he has mentored and taught me as much as he possibly could, whilst delivering an exceptional level of work.

Abdul always goes above and beyond to help myself and other members of the team to achieve IEng and CEng status. He is always looking at using new technologies, equipment and innovative design ideas to enhance the railway. To make sure he's update with new technologies, he is always organising CPD seminars from leading manufacturers and suppliers.

Abdul is a great engineer and without any doubt truly deserves this nomination."“
