Said the following about Scott Richards:

“I am a train driver at Brighton Thameslink and I would like to nominate Scott Richards the Yard Protecter (YP) at Brighton Down Sidings. Scott has worked as the YP for roughly 3 years at this location, to my knowledge. Scott is continuously conscientious and I would suggest an extremely valuable member of the railway team. He is one of 3 YP’s however due to staff problems he is currently only 1 of 2. As a result of this, he has been working 13 night shifts out of 14 in a row for many months now. I feel this shows a continued dedication to not only his role but to the Railway, missing out on precious time with his family, most importantly his young son. Considering the amount of work he is clearly undertaking, Scott is always presentable, polite, friendly, and very welcoming which is an attribute he should be very proud of.

Scott manages a team of train presentation staff at the sidings, who all speak very highly of him.

On numerous occasions he has had to deal with trespassers on the railway who are undertaking graffiti paintings on the birthed trains. This means liaising with British Transport Police & completing reports on this issue, long after his shift has actually finished - again showing dedication to his role.

Just last winter Scott and the train presentation staff spent a considerable amount of time moving sand from the far end of the sidings to each train, to fill up the train sanders, the equipment required to do this easily isn’t available and therefore has to be done manually which is a very taxing task, Scott and his team completed it & still had a smile on their faces at the end. I have no doubt that Scott is able to motivate his team with his positive outlook and cheery ways. It’s nice to see that whenever I go to the sidings, he’s always happy, and is always willing to help us drivers. In my opinion Scott is an invaluable part of the GTR team and an attribute to Brighton, we’re very lucky to have him.“

Paul Davies

Said the following about Scott Richards:

“Scott has for several months worked at Brighton down sidings which has been understaffed. He constantly worked 13 night shifts straight with one day off and straight back into 13 night shifts at work. This went on for several months.

He routinely puts his work ahead of family time to ensure that trains were maintained and cleaned and ready for customers, something many other staff members wouldn’t have done.

He’s always polite and upbeat despite the constant night shifts which are gruelling.

The fact that he delayed his annual leave in order to keep the sidings open and working when there were no staff available is a testament to his dedication and he should be recognised and rewarded.

His managers should be grateful to have Scott as part of their team.“
