Said the following about Geraldine Williams **HAS LEFT**:

“I am very impressed by Geraldine’s level of knowledge, skills and commitment to her role in rail safety – I have learnt so much from her having joined the division earlier this year. She has an extraordinary wealth of knowledge and shares this knowledge generously with others. She shows genuine concern for our health and safety, and she has succeeded in getting staff to engage in a topic that can be dry and uninteresting through her informative and engaging monthly video animations / cascades which were independently delivered from December 2017 to June 2018. The cascades have received a rating of 4.2/5 stars from rail staff. As a result, the ‘Go-Animate’ platform was shared with the Mott MacDonald Learning and Development team, who have now started to use this platform for delivering some crucial learning material, specifically relating to the introduction of GDPR in the UK and for our business.

Geraldine spent two month visiting our Australian division earlier this year to carry out a Safety and Compliance review of Australian rail processes and requirements (using legislation, standards and guidance from ONRSR, TfNSW, Public Transport Victoria and Queensland Rail) for MM which included updating Local Business Instructions (LBI); introducing new LBI’s for PPE and accessing site; updating several MM cascade animations to suit the Australian business and improve safety culture; providing guidance on safety performance, KPI’s and Information Security processes; reviewing PPE and hygiene process as well as developing intranet pages for the Australian rail division. The feedback she received from the Australian division was very positive, scoring 4.5*/5* – written examples of good performance was received from senior managers including:

“Bringing the knowledge from the UK and sharing, giving the confidence to senior management of what we are missing here in Australia.”

“Used good initiative and her excellent people skills to elicit information about existing (and sometimes incomplete) systems and processes, adding ideas and energy in helping those responsible to find ways to complete outstanding tasks. Excellent at keeping concise notes and providing structured action plans.”

“The ANZ rail business has greatly benefitted from the 6 weeks that Geraldine has spent out here. She has provided excellent guidance and ideas as to how best to enhance the existing ANZ rail safety and competency systems. Sharing leanings from her work in the UK and actively completing tasks with minimal guidance and direction from me.”

She was commended for doing more than was expected, such as putting on an event to mark World Safety Day and raising awareness of Mott MacDonald H&S initiatives, processes and KPIs in our Australian Offices, which received some pushback due to the cross-state processes required. Geraldine positively encouraged the senior management team to adopt the highest protection requirements (i.e. fatigue limits, PPE, hygiene, wellbeing etc.) and/or lowest acceptable limits (i.e. Drugs and Alcohol) and/or UK developed good practice and roll it out in our developing business operations.

Geraldine spent the preceding five months (November 2017 – March 2018) deputising for her manager in the UK which saw her use her initiative to deliver support to key stakeholders and included attending and inputting into senior executive meetings, setting the H&S training budget for 2018, and supporting the 755 sentinel sponsored staff during this time, on top of her usual duties.

Geraldine used her creativity to recently launch the ‘Railway H&S Key Point’ card, which highlights key H&S statistics ‘at a glance’ and gives an action plan for expected improvements. She monitors this monthly and links it in her animations.

She recently received her certificates for ‘NEBOSH Managing Health and Wellbeing’, with Credit pass demonstrating her commitment to self-improvement and the health and wellbeing of those around her and in the Railway division. She strives to be a champion for Health and wellbeing in the workplace, this was evident when she led the ‘Time to Talk’ day in Croydon stand-down which aimed at promoting discussions about mental health conditions and which generated some great feedback which was used to improve the way we deliver our messages, increased our wellbeing initiatives and prompted good discussion for improvements with our group’s processes and systems. The Time to Talk day was attended by 95% of the 355 strong division and received an overall rating of 4.8*/5*.

Geraldine always goes over and above the call of duty to provide us as staff with relevant information that will help us stay safe and healthy both in and out of work. I have come across so much useful information she has provided the railways division that I've not some across elsewhere. Her passion and drive is clear to see and she continues to improve herself professionally through learning new skills and gaining new qualifications.

Definitely an inspiration to us all and deserving of the award!“
