Name: Martyn Royce
Job title: Train Planner
Company: Chiltern Railways
Location: Banbury
Why they should be this
years newcomer / graduate of the year?
Martyn started off in the department as a placement student on the diagramming side. Martyn has now stepped up to the position that I left in July of this year and is now a fully fledged train planner. martyn has undertaken many other duties and not just stayed at his desk...whether it's moving the crowds at Wembley Stadium Station on Event Days or out in the thick of it during engineering work when he can quite often be found co-ordinating rail replacement buses or supervising diversions at Oxford Station. Martyn has a bright and enthusiastic outlook, always ready, willing (and able) to help. Not only is he great with the public, he's also great with his colleagues, willing them along or providing support and laughter along the way. He really is the definition of team player. He's always ready to ask when he has to undertake a new task and I believe he has a great career ahead of him.

Name: Anton Harvey
Job title: Gates Manager
Company: LU
Location: Glasshouse
Why they should be this
years newcomer / graduate of the year?
Anton stepped into the role of acting Gates Manager after the ahead of plan arrival of the incumbent’s new baby. Faced with no handover, an exponentially growing portfolio of work and a growing reliance on investment gate management as the major business control process, Anton faced a mammoth task. He has risen to the task and has truly transformed the gates process to be a pithy, meaningful, insightful and rigorous process that adds real value to the project and ensures that the taxpayer gets full value for money. To achieve this he had to win over the many disparate project teams, sponsors and stakeholders and create a climate where project teams felt he was approachable and helpful rather than a gate keeper sat in judgement. The effect on delivery and cost has been immediate and dramatic. Projects, despite using processes that were always in place, are now more fully prepared for their next stage, the reporting and forecasting is significantly more accurate and the draw down of risk visibly reduced – his input has given a delivery assurance that was rarely seen before. He has boundless energy for his role, and for helping the project teams, advising and proactively managing the various stakeholders and has developed an amazing level of knowledge in under a year. His transformation and the impact he has had on the business is truly impressive. I have no hesitation in giving him the strongest possible recommendation for this award.
-------------------------------------------------------
"Extremely approachable. Goes above and beyond his role to help. Has been constructive in aiding projects pass their gate review. Always cheerful with a great sense of humour adding to a happy and therefore work effective environment within the building. Has fine tuned the Gates process to make it more effective and user friendly".

"Darren started with FCC in November 2009, and has gone beyond the call of duty within his role. Name: Rylan Dobson
Job title: Project Management Assistant
Company: Network Rail
Location: Kings Cross, London
Why they should be this
years newcomer / graduate of the year?
"Rylan Dobson joined Network Rail as a project management assistant in 2009 working on Platform 0 at the King’s Cross Station Redevelopment Programme. He quickly demonstrated his ability to encompass the Network Rail values in his daily work, and his professionalism and performance has been noted by all.
Rylan was keen to take on responsibility from the outset, and under my guidance as his project manager he chaired all the design progress meetings with our contractors.
His biggest contribution to the business is the central role he took in ensuring two critical possessions were delivered in Christmas 2009 and Easter 2010. By fully embracing the principals of delivering works within possessions standard, he robustly checked all documentation provided by a wide variety of organisations to check it would exceed the requirements of both our project and Network Rail. He took the leading role in coordinating all readiness reviews, and assisted the Risk in Value team in coordinating the Quantified Schedule Risk Assessments. The primary piece of evidence supporting this success is the fact that all works were delivered within the possessions with no negative impact to the operational railway. This led to the successful completion of the project on time, with the grand opening being held by the Secretary of State for Transport, Philip Hammond. This has created greater functionality for King’s Cross station in the future, and has allowed the refurbishment of other platforms to commence on time. Furthermore, Rylan’s fantastic work in preparing for these critical possessions was given the ultimate review when the Easter 2010 possession was picked by the ORR / Halcrow as a project that would be reviewed to check Network Rail’s compliance with the standard. Following this audit, the work at King’s Cross Redevelopment Programme by Rylan has identified areas of best practice that could be rolled out across the company. Since then, Rylan has been liaising with the central team to try and ensure that best practice in delivering complex possessions is shared effectively throughout the organisation".

Name: Wayne Smith
Job title: Station Manager
Company: Northern Rail
Location: Blackpool and Fylde area
Why they should be this
years newcomer / graduate of the year?
"Wayne joined the Lancashire and Cumbria Station Management team in January, after a successful career in the Logistics arm of the British Army. Whatever challenge he is faced with, he approaches it with a smile on his face. His smile and enthusiasm are infectious and he is a huge hit with anyone who meets him.
He has brought some fresh ideas as well as management experience to the role which has proved to be invaluable. Without any prompting he has conducted a full review of current working practices, challenging the norm and saving the business almost £50K as part of his financial appraisal. Absolutely nothing fazes him and he always gets the best out of people, whether they are colleagues or customers.
Two recent operational incidents caused widespread disruption to the local rail network. On both occasions, Wayne was first on the scene, dealing with numerous irate and distressed customers in a calm and dignified way, working tirelessly to ensure that colleagues were kept up to date with the latest information and that customers were transported as quickly as possible to their destination.
Not only does he help with station incidents, he singlehandedly arranged a gala day at Blackpool North station to raise money for charity, organising stalls, bringing together key stakeholders, industry partners, customers and local businesses including Donna’s Dream House, a home for terminally ill children. This led to another day at the station entertaining children with disabilities from the hospice; the children had the time of their lives and told him they all thought he was wonderful!
His colleagues are equally impressed and sum up why Wayne deserves this award:
‘Wayne is an absolute superstar and a fantastic asset to the team, Northern as a business, and the rail industry as a whole. It is a pleasure working with him.’
‘He has been a great success with the local station staff, his peers and the senior area managers as well as the many and varied stakeholders he has helped in his short time with Northern.’
--------------------------------------------------------
From the outset it was obvious that Wayne, who joined Northern Rail as Station Manager Fylde, was going to be a team player. Almost before he had his feet under the table he had been helping out with Safety Briefs to Station Partnerships and lead the organisation of the first of Blackpool North's Station Gala days.
Wayne continues to be very proactive and has taken to the railway industry with relish. He regularly attends Community Rail Partnership meetings and is to be seen out on stations and liaising with staff. Wayne always goes the extra mile and is popular with work colleagues and passengers alike, always ready to listen and help. For someone who is new to the rail industry he has embraced the culture and his experience of dealing face to face with customers from his previous employment has come to the fore in his current role.

Name: Satnam Thiara
Job title: Sales & Marketing Manager
Company: Bridgeway Consulting Ltd
Location: Nottingham
Why they should be this
years newcomer / graduate of the year?
"Satnam only joined Bridgeway in June 2009 and is a relative newcomer to the rail industry with less than 2 years experience, having previously worked in the I.T. / Communications industry. However, Satnam has embraced the career direction change with such enthusiasm and a determination to make his mark in the industry, which has been laudable and a pleasure to witness.
He took up the role of Sales and Marketing Manager, with responsibility for the development of safety critical training with a remit to increase the training business turnover and profile within the industry, which had previously been low key and a relatively small division of the business. His success in turning the operation around from base level to a highly successful and high profile business has been immense. His personal contribution to the massive increase in customers has been down to his dogged determination to meet and exceed client’s expectations and develop sound business relationships.
He has also helped to lift the profile of the Company by developing new marketing strategies and promotional material and expanded the portfolio of client contacts with his easy going and helpful style has won over many a new customer.
The Company demands consistently high standards from all their staff and operational delivery is at the forefront of everything that we do, so Satnam threw himself into safety critical training and has quickly gained several competencies and now practices what he preaches by tramping the ballast most weekends putting his training to good use. With his experience “On Track” he can now speak with authority when trying to convince new customers to use Bridgeway as their preferred training supplier to the industry and his no nonsense approach provides Clients with the reassurance that he will ensure delivery of their requirements.
As a direct result of his input, training turnover within the Company has seen a substantial increase despite the poor state of the marketplace at present – this alone would be sufficient to identify his excellent sales skills. However, he is now making full use of his BA(Hons) degree in Business Management and will I’m sure go from strength to strength within the Company and has been a breath of fresh air with his “can do, will do” attitude and committed approach to work.
Satnam is a very personable character who embraces life both inside and outside of work and his infectious enthusiasm and commitment stems from his other great passion in life, that being an Asian Music DJ, for which he has made a name for himself all over the East Midlands and beyond. By his own admission and never one to miss a sales opportunity, he’s available for hire for weddings, birthdays and family celebrations of all kinds!
I have no hesitation in recommending Satnam for the award of Newcomer/Graduate of the Year and feel confident that his nomination will be fully supported, not only those of us within the business, but also by his many Clients and other Rail sector people he has come into contact with over the last year.
He is a shining example of what hard work and commitment can achieve in such a short space of time and he gives inspiration to all young people to strive for life’s goals".

Name: Daniel Foster
Job title: Quantity Surveyor
Company: Bridgeway Consulting Ltd
Location: Nottingham
Why they should be this
years newcomer / graduate of the year?
"I believe that Daniel is an excellent example of and ambassador for the future of the Rail Industry. He is young, driven and passionate about the projects that he is involved in and approaches his working life with refreshing enthusiasm. This type of attitude is what will take the Rail Industry and Bridgeway forward and I am convinced that over the next few years Daniel Foster will have a positive impact on both.
This award is particularly relevant for Daniel as he is a newcomer to Bridgeway and the Rail industry in main and has graduated in his Quantity Surveyor degree this year. Daniels professional achievements to date are as follows:-
After studying A levels Daniel decided to enrol on a Bsc (hons) Quantity Surveying course with a year in industry placement in year 3 at Sheffield Hallam University. His year 3 placement was with GrantRail (Now VolkerRail) based in Doncaster. His trainee role was within their Projects department shadowing and assisting a senior quantity surveyor with numerous contracts and a large scale claim.
After his year in industry GrantRail enrolled him on to their sponsorship scheme, to which his study changed from full time attending university to full time work with day release. With this came his promotion from trainee Quantity Surveyor to Assistant Quantity Surveyor, and the opportunity to take ownership of live contracts up to the value of £4m. These contracts included: -
• Corus Maintenance contracts - This contract spanned 4 separate sites completing maintenance of the Corus rail infrastructure at Scunthorpe, Teesside, Llanwern and Port Talbot. Annual Value £4 million.
• Various light Rail contracts, giving experience in both permanent way and civils. Contracts Including : -
o Sheffield Supertram - This contract was for maintenance and renewal of the tram infrastructure In Sheffield. Annual Value £1 million
o Nottingham Express Transit - This contract was for the renewal of the tram infrastructure In Nottingham, Various projects were undertaken on behalf of Carillon including the renewal of the Cross over at the Royal Centre. Annual Value £1 million.
o Midland Metro - This contract was for maintenance and renewal of the tram infrastructure In Birmingham. Annual Value £500k
o ALH Rail coatings Ltd – To develop estimating and overall management skills Daniel was given the opportunity to price, develop and progress all items associated with ALH Rail coatings Ltd. ALH rail coatings was a joint venture between GrantRail (Volker Rail) and DOW Hyperlast, and supplied a range of solutions that met stray current protection and noise and vibration specifications on Tram infrastructure. ALH Rail coatings also supplied Pre coated rails for the Network Rail infrastructure in areas prone to standing water – these rails were coated with an ‘Epigrip’ paint solution to deter rust and rotting of the rail. The annual value of the ALH Rail coating was circa £2 million, with estimating of future works rising to £12 million with infamous rail projects such as the Edinburgh Tram.
To ensure that he gained as much experience as possible Daniel was placed on live multi disciplinary joint venture and main contractor projects which required a commercial team as a separate entity. These contracts included: -
• Dublin C1-400 – This contract was a joint venture between GrantRail (Volker Rail) and Laing o Rouke, extending the Dublin tram infrastructure out to the financial district area of Dublin. Contract Value €13 million.
• Manchester Metro Link Renewals – In 2008 GrantRail (Volker Rail) were awarded the contract of renewing a large section of the Tram infrastructure around Piccadilly gardens. Contract Value £7 million.
In August 2009 Daniel graduated From Sheffield Hallam University and successfully interviewed for a role at Bridgeway Consulting Ltd as a Quantity Surveyor within their Commercial department. His new role requires working closely with project and construction delivery managers in the pricing and winning of new works, tender negotiations and submissions and completing Quantity Surveying and Procurement duties on live projects.
Since He joined Bridgeway Consulting Ltd in 2009, we have had some great successes in the winning of new works, with new and old clients of which Daniel has contributed greatly. To detail a few: -
• May Gurney Palmers Green Platform renewals – this contract is a refurbishment to the Palmers Green station. With a tight programme of 8 weeks, the contract requires renewal of the platform surface, drainage, fencing and overall extension of the operational platform. The contract at Palmers Green has also required innovative problem solving, with no access to platform 1, Bridgeway Consulting Ltd are one of the first companies to utilise a polystyrene bridge between platforms to ensure plant and materials can gain access to ensure contract delivery and completion.
• Serco, Old Dalby maintenance and minor works – This contract is a two yearly maintenance contract at Old Dalby, completing inspections, point oiling and tightening of joints. Bridgeway Consulting Ltd was awarded the contract form undertaking the Cess retention and a well know bank slip site. Bridgeway Consulting Ltd implemented another innovate construction method utilising grundomat piling and ballast boards to ensure stability and no future movement of the slipping bank.
• Galliford Try – Colchester Law Courts – this again details the diversity of Bridgeway Consulting Ltd, undertaking a civils project in demolition and construction of a ca park standing area and retaining wall.
Other clients included Murphy’s, Birse, and Network Rail.
Daniel has told me that to date he has immensely enjoyed the challenge Bridgeway and the Rail Industry has offered and the opportunity to price, win and commercially manage all contracts awarded.
I believe that since he has gained his degree and become a Quantity Surveyor for Bridgeway that he is really fulfilling his potential. It is a pleasure to have him on my commercial team".

Name: Valentina Seradi
Job title: Correspondance Administrator
Company: Transport for London
Location: Pier Walk, North Greenwich
Why they should be this
years newcomer / graduate of the year?
“She made me feel welcome when I first started working on the Oyster card help desk and assisted me with any queries I had with the systems at work. She always has a smile on her face and is very motivational and approachable when it comes to work. There was a time when I was having a really stressful day due to my studies and working full time and her kind words motivated me in working hard to chase my dream. She even encouraged me to apply for permanent roles within the company which I really appreciated. Valentina deserves this award as she helps a lot of people and is always there for everyone. She makes working for Transport for London a great place and I wish there were more people like her”.
--------------------------------------------------------
"I am nominating Valentina for her outstanding work of continuously exceeding expectations. She is not only approachable and helpful but takes pride in her work. She is a star"
---------------------------------------------------------
“Valentina has really made a difference since she joined Oyster last year. As a newcomer myself I did not take to all the processes as quick as others and honestly struggled to adapt to the system, Valentina always made an effort to help me and when possible she would take time to explain things in her own words and made me feel as a valued colleague. I feel she deserves this award because from the first day she started she hit the ground running and always showed determination to do her job to the best of her ability. She was very quick to familiarise herself with the demands of working on the Oyster Helpdesk whilst providing exceptional customer service and within the 6 months was training new starters to do the same job to her high standards. Through her hard work and determination she has now progressed to a Correspondence Administrator role where she continues to set an example to everyone what a bit of time, patience and determination can do for you. I would like to personally thank Valentina from my heart for the help she has given me to develop my career and sincerely hope she wins this award she deserves it”.
----------------------------------------------------------
“Since Valentina started at Oyster she has shown a hunger to learn and has used her bubbly and friendly personality to bring her team together and brighten up the work place. On many occasions she has gone the extra mile to help colleagues, particularly in regards to new starters where she has shown dedication into helping them achieve targets and feel comfortable. She has been flexible when working and is always willing to make changes to accommodate business needs - often changing shifts at last minute or working over time to help the team. I believe it would be nice to show recognition of how much she has achieved by being nominated for this award -Valentina to win!”

Name: Paul Vassar
Job title: Graduate Engineer
Company: Carillion Rail
Location: London
Why they should be this
years newcomer / graduate of the year?
“Paul is a very professional engineer who has excelled in everything he has been tasked with. As a graduate civil engineer I initially tasked him with the installation of the overhead line foundations on WP04 on NLRIP. He used his knowledge and training to install concrete and piled foundations efficiently and safely with excellent co-ordination with other contractors and disciplines. Upon completion of the foundations Paul jumped at the chance to install the OLE structures, SPS and transfer the wires. What he lacked in experience with the OLE he more than made up with his enthusiasm to deliver the package of works. He used the experienced supervisors around him to ensure the job was well planned, delivered to programme, budget and most importantly safely.
On one particular job at NLRIP on work package 3 there was a design to install three overhead line structures in an embankment. Paul worked closely with the permanent and temporary works designers to come up with a constructable design. With the assistance of the commercial team he engaged with sub-contractors to ensure the works were priced and delivered to a high standard. Paul worked tirelessly to ensure we had agreement with CTRL and the local council to ensure the works could begin. On a number of occasions works were delayed and Paul worked to resolve these with an engineering mind. Due to the over all delay a last minute design change for the foundations was required. Using his knowledge from the previous package of work Paul changed the structure foundation design to piled and hence no curing time for concrete was required. The piles were installed, the structures erected and the catenary system wires were run on time.
In my eyes what Paul, as a graduate engineer, delivered would be found taxing by a number of experienced project managers. One day Paul will make an outstanding project manager; he will excel in any position his career path takes him”.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Hardworking goes above and beyond the call of duty. Constantly works 60 hours + a week even though his paid working hour limit is just 40".
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Paul's professionalism is exemplary and has led the OHLE construction team to successfully deliver Channelsea OHLE remodelling on North London Lines through a series of difficult blockades and possessions".
---------------------------------------------------------
“Above and beyond their role, hard working, helpful, initiative, knowledgeable, proactive, professional, responsible, safety, team player. I worked with Paul over the last 12 months and I have witnessed all the above”.
----------------------------------------------------------
“Paul has been proactive, demonstrated initiative and has shown tremendous enthusiasm. Paul has not shied away from using problem situations to self develop. Paul is also currently involved with Carillion's Values 2010 in the role of Values Champion for Infrastructure Rail”.

Name: Hayley Scanlon
Job title: Logistics Co-ordinator
Company: Amey
Location: Sutton Courtney, Oxon
Why they should be this
years newcomer / graduate of the year?
“Hayley has been with this department, (OTM), for a few months to help introduce the new OTPS system. Throughout this process she has conducted herself in an incredibly open, friendly, and extremely helpful manner. It is without a doubt that without her ongoing help and support I would have really struggled to use this new system.
Hayley has a brilliant sense of humour and is an integral part of our team. As a colleague I find her to be a real inspiration; she is able to explain things with absolute clarity, and encourages the efforts of everybody around her.
The new OTPS system that we are now required to use is completely different to the package that I had been using. When it was first introduced I was really worried that I wouldn’t be able to get to grips with it. I also had serious concerns over whether I would have the time to use both the old and new systems during the phasing in period which is currently taking place. However, thanks to Hayley and the continued support that she has offered me I now feel confident that we will be able to see this project through”.

“This nominee, who is my peer, is exceptionally enthusiastic about the Underground, possessing knowledge of trains above that of a typical graduate. He has also been approached by a member of the IET to give a lecture at Savoy Place. Chris is dedicated to the success of the Underground, constantly helping lost or confused customers when simply commuting between offices.

On a Friday afternoon when work had just finished, Chris volunteered, without hesitation and financial incentive, to perform Customer Service Assistant duties helping direct customers and pedestrians away from the site. This continued on for some hours”.

Name: Infrastructure Training Service Team
Job title: Training and Assessment Center
Company: ITS/Cleshar
Location: Lenham, Kent
Why they should be this
years newcomer / graduate of the year?
"I am nominating ITS (Infrastructure Training Service) for ‘Best Newcomer’. The Team is a group of highly experienced individuals, who in December officially Achieved full link-up accreditation as a Network Rail Licensed Training and Assessment Centre. The team projected managed an area of wasteland, which involve environmental issues with slow worms, a local allotment holder and drainage problems too name a few, but they came threw smiling. After 6 months of sheer determination and hard work the area has now 3 modern training rooms with state of the art electronic media systems to support training events. The team really showed determination when the construction and installation of a simulated test-track had to be built. Many managers have in the past looked at ‘Team Building’ courses to bring players and observers together in creating a team. This was not required for the ITS Training Department! Each individual has brought new ideas and processes to our company, and in return it has given our employees and clients a highly skilled work force promoting a safety conscious workforce and environment. Many companies steered away from financial commitment for new projects, given the financial climate over past year; this was not the case with Cleshar who were fully committed in the development of our licensed Network Rail Training centre. ITS stands for Infrastructure Training Services, and the service this group of people offer is to the highest standard. The team has provided our company with provisions in achieving a highly skilled work force. The team have delivered from the start, and continue to diversify there own skills, which in return supports everyone. There commitment to this project was to give our company a first class safety training centre; I believe they have achieved this. This competition is a fantastic opportunity for those people in the Rail Industry to recognize the skills and commitment of staff. This category however is for ‘Rail Team’, I hope that people in the industry will look at these individuals who make up our team, and look at not only the training, but all the aspects which go on behind the scenes. The telephone manner, the knowledge and understanding which is offered, the learning environment which you may have experienced or maybe you know the team? This team never gets discouraged and during the early stages of this project timescales did not go to plan, and when extreme weather stopped vehicles accessing the site, the team kept going and achieved the target opening date. During the short period of time this team have worked together they have risen to new challenges and joined too become a highly skilled team, England football team cannot collect the world cup with just one player, and ITS cannot provide the service they do, without all the players. The early part of this year the team faced something that could not have planned, snow! The team made it in to ensure training events went ahead, however the team made it threw the snow but alas the candidates didn’t. But the team however became involved in digging cars out that were stranded at the station in Lenham. The Training Centre office is part of the Old Station Masters house at Lenham, the training teams roles during this adverse weather changed, and involved making tea for passengers that had been stranded at a station left with no trains, mums with young baby’s, the elderly were all kept warm till the roads cleared. It really has been a journey over the last few months for this team and when I say everyone has worked so hard I really do mean everyone. This is shown in the attention to detail in the development of this project, the before and after pictures clearly show the teams achievement in what they have achieved, this award would certainly be an amazing recognition for there efforts. It has clearly been a team effort in the construction, design, audit and administration process, with all the team taking a hands-on approach. The team continues to support each other and work as a unit and given the market and recession facing many companies, Infrastructure Training Service has proven that with hard work and sheer determination it can work. The team comprises of Gail Peters, Michele Groat, Carol Toms, Steve Wells and Ian Regan. The team continues to succeed in ensuring they offer the highest level of training and give the candidates the maxim learning environment that they can provided. The team would love recognition for the hard work and enthusiasm which they have given and the RailStaff Awards is a perfect opportunity for me as a Director to nominate a team of my staff, who have really worked together as a team, as individuals they all deliver in there key areas, but as a team the dynamics and personalities of the individuals mix and interact which in return gives me and our Company a very effective team indeed".
----------------------------------------------------------
“The training team always provide a professional, friendly service. The team is always available to answer any questions and provide excellent feedback. Booking of the training is always easy and the team always try to meet my training requirements”.
