Name: Ken Leach
Job title: Duty Station Manager
Company: London Underground Limited
Location: King's Cross Station
Why they should be this
years lifetime achievement award?
“If an individual ever deserved a lifetime achievement award for his work on the underground then Ken Leach is that man. I have worked on the underground for many years and have encountered countless numbers of different people, be they LU, Metronet, contractors or whomever, I can say with absolute certainty that not one of them have had the same level of commitment, flexibility, enthusiasm, determination, openness and a willingness to help as Ken. His energy in dealing with 5 of 6 different parallel projects and literally hundreds of workers every night on his station is truly amazing, and the level of detail that he absorbs is remarkable and probably unique.
Ken is one of those rare characters of whom everyone speaks well. Everyone holds him in equally high regard and his affable and engaging style breaks down even the most tense situation or problem into easy to resolve pieces – he is masterly at getting all the completing parties to work for a common goal. His dedication to the Station, and the travelling public, is so far beyond the norm that it is difficult to explain the lengths he will go to on order to deliver a quality service. He seems to be omnipresent at the station, be it with the public in the day or with contractors during engineering hours – he sees the station as something to be proud of and works tirelessly to improve every aspect of it. He has been an absolute delight to work with over the last 4 years and the underground will be losing an immense figure and tireless workhorse when he retires this year. The underground will be much the poorer for his well earned retirement. The progress and success of the projects at King’s Cross will stand as a lasting testament to Ken and it is entirely fitting that in his retirement year we recognise his life long dedication to the railway sector".
------------------------------------------------------------
“Ken has consistently put the company before his family life, especially during the refurbishment of Kings Cross Station, where he'd be on the station at all hours of the day and night. He is about to retire after having given 40 years of dedication to London Underground. His level of knowledge in all aspects of working for, and application of the rules of London Underground really is second to none. His bravery and leadership on the day of the 7th July bombings, he was on duty that day, was, from what I'm lead to believe, inspirational. On that day, he once again put others before himself”.
-------------------------------------------------------------
“I am nominating Ken Leach as he was silver control for 7th July. He worked above the call of duty with long hours etc. Also he has been involved with The King's Cross Project which meant that the new ticket halls opened on time and within budget. Ken is always available to help any staff and is always helpful”.
----------------------------------------------------------
“Has dedicated his working life to the transportation of London’s travelling public and in making their journeys as safe, speedy and comfortable as possible. His knowledge and professionalism is second to none”.

Name: Chris Ling
Job title: Duty Station Manager
Company: London Underground Ltd
Location: Earls Court
Why they should be this
years lifetime achievement award?
For going above and beyond their role.
I would like to nominate DSM Chris Ling of London Underground (Earls Court Group) who richly deserves to be recognised in this category in this year in which he retires after many years of highly dedicated service.
Chris is difficult to define as he is like one of the old-school types; always very correct, always very well turned out, and with him there is never any misunderstanding that with him business comes first and in these regards, for those who don’t know him he can appear, at least for me initially, quite regimented.
However, in contrast to this he has a refreshingly modern outlook too whereby he actively encourages all members of his staff without exception. He is knowledgeable and always helpful and his determination extends to being keen to help his team members develop too. This is because he has the ability to see in people qualities they may not even see in themselves and what sets him above many of the other good managers in the company is that he not just sees and recognises it, he actively encourages this potential within people to be developed and works with them to help them achieve what their abilities will allow.
I for one am one of the beneficiaries of Chris’ forward looking outlook and at a time when things were not going right for me in the company I was set to resign; I had a number of issues I couldn’t resolve, and although I hardly knew him (he’d only recently become my Duty Station Manager) he stepped in, and being protective, talked me out of handing in my notice and provided a different solution for me.
I was only a struggling booking clerk in those days but I have since gone on to become a Station Supervisor and was made the Energy and Environment Champion for the Central Line and in this capacity I had the honour of receiving the Special Achievements award last year.
How very different things would have turned out if it had not been for Chris Ling’s proactive and nurturing endeavours who set an extraordinary example I try in my own way to follow. And I know many others will be able to tell similar stories to me”.

Name: Bernie Peal
Job title: Performance Manager
Company: London Underground
Location: Metropolitan Line
Why they should be this
years lifetime achievement award?
We would like to nominate Bernie Peal for the following reasons: He's a pleasure to work with, he is knowledgeable, he is a great team player, he is very friendly, he is always a gentleman and he really does his very best to support his staff.
It is extremely difficult to pinpoint specific examples as this is his normal behaviour and has been throughout his 39 years and 2 months on the job - but we shall do our very best!
He is a man who everyone finds approachable and this is demonstrated just from the phone calls we often receive in the office, from staff that don’t even work for him, but who have met him out on the railway and have felt that they can talk to him about an issue they would not discuss with others.
Our staff positively welcome him when he is out on the line. He is very inclusive, open and appreciates the qualities of all. He sees the best in people and has the ability to bring out the best qualities from all.
Over the years Bernie has had many Managers join his team and his behaviours and his consideration for individuals have been paramount in continually developing very successful teams, with many of his protégés moving on to promotional positions. Indeed Bernie has crossed the organisational boundaries with panache and has formed constructive, fruitful relationships with other departments as well as external stakeholders.
Bernie has the ability to get his staff and colleagues to work hard and go the extra mile for him and this is done through Bernie’s inimitable style of engaging with people in a motivational and collaborative way. His management of the Metropolitan Line Stations teams has contributed hugely to the success of the line and indeed to the Tube’s success throughout the years.
He is a thoroughly deserving person, a pleasure to work with and having worked for the Company man and boy it would be a wonderful recognition of the warm, considerate and kind person that he is to receive such an award.”
-------------------------------------------------------------
“Helpful, friendly, reliable, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I worked with Bernie at Baker Street for 7 months while I was on a secondment dealing with the line upgrade work. Bernie was a constant source of support and guidance helping me to deliver a sustainable service during service disruption caused by engineering work. Bernie helped me to focus on customers and staff providing them with the information they needed to get around our network when work was taking place. Bernie's approachable friendly attitude enabled people like me to ask him for his support and guidance tapping into his vast knowledge and experience which he readily shares. He has a positive infectious way about him and is a joy to work with”.

Name: Martin Cannon
Job title: Training Manager
Company: Bridgen Training Ltd
Location: West Horndon Essex
Why they should be this
years lifetime achievement award?
“Martin Cannon joined British Rail in the early eighties starting as a basic trackman, his enthusiasm and hard work soon got him promoted to track chargeman running a difficult 22 man gang and within a year the reputation of his gang became first class and he was promoted up to section supervisor. Martin’s skill is in communication and a willingness to work “out of the box” to encourage strengths in others, he held courses after work for the workers to enable them to obtain their First Aid Certificates and always encouraged others to gain extra certifications that could help them with their careers.
When a training position became available at the BR training centre, this was a natural progression and he became one of the youngest trainers on BR, whilst still working as a supervisor at weekends to keep his skills and knowledge updated.
When the railway became privatised, Martin Cannon formed Cannon Training Ltd which quickly became a highly respected training centre and won him Railtrack Training Provider of the Year and individually Trainer of the Year. Over the next few years Martin worked closely with Network Rail and the ARTP helping devise and set up Rail Plant, Track Safety Plans, 3rd Rail Isolations and Overhead lines. He is a member of the IOSH Railway Interest Group, is NEBOSH and has just completed NVQ level 4 in Occupational Health and Safety and has also assisted the office of Rail Regulators and the Rail Accident/Incident Board with advice and information.
For the past 3 years Martin has been running Bridgen Training Ltd once again bringing this training school up to the highest level and constantly investing and promoting in Health and Safety on the railway. This year Martin has been asked to visit Saudi Arabia to promote and help them with railway safety training and after a request form the Columbian Government spent 10 days with Gerry Prendergast running a 10 day course to enabling them to make their railway more safe and efficient.
Martin Cannon deserves this Lifetime Achievement Award for his work within the railway industry as he has worked his way tirelessly through every spectrum of the Railway and his work with Railway Safety. His enthusiasm and commitment to Health and Safety and his dedication to the Railway Infrastructure makes him an ideal candidate and a worthwhile nominee as he is noted by all who know him for his patience, attention to detail and a commitment to getting things right.

Throughout this time he has shown total commitment to the job, never refusing any shift or task, and often working beyond his hours to get the job done. This attitude demonstrates his dedication to the job, as Michael has never sought any kind of reward for the excellent job he does.

Name: David Carter
Job title: Training Consultant
Company: Interfleet Technology
Location: Derby
Why they should be this
years lifetime achievement award?
“David commenced his railway career on 6th June 1966 or 6-6-66! After a railway career spanning nearly 45 years he is as enthusiastic and dedicated as ever to the industry as on the day he started. He is a proud ‘railwayman’ and loves nothing more than to be able to pass on his vast knowledge and wisdom that has been amassed during his career. Known and recognised by hundreds of people personally, it is hard to find a Train Operating Company or Train Maintenance organisation that doesn’t have someone who knows him through the courses he has delivered over the 30 year training career he has had ….… to date ! He started work at Wakefield Depot as an apprentice and went on to spend time in Doncaster Works learning his craft as a Locomotive Maintenance Engineer before moving back to Depots at Healey Mills and Leeds where he became a Breakdown Supervisor on the Rail Vehicle Recovery gangs operating in that area. As many of his colleagues know he is very skilled with a pencil and paper and this was put to good use as his career lead him to being a Railway Draughtsman working on the Great Northern Electrification scheme in the 1970’s. Dave moved into Traction & Rolling Stock Training during the 1980’s and became a senior trainer in the old Eastern Region of BR specialising in Cranes and lifting Jacks, Diesel Engines and Brakes courses. He even made Videos for British Rail, something he has repeated in recent times helping other Rail Investigation Bodies with. In the 1990’s he joined the Derby based BR Central Services Division before that became College of Railway Technology and post privatisation as Catalis Rail Training. David took retirement in 2008 but became bored very quickly plus he missed the contact and camaraderie within the Railway and with the demands for his speciality training as high as ever was persuaded to work on a part time basis. Joining the Interfleet Technology Training & Competence Team in 2008 he is requested by name to this very day to deliver courses in his specialist areas such as Incident Management, Vehicle Re-Railing and Wheel Lathe Operator. David is a wonderful orator and his courses as well as being extremely informative are also highly entertaining with anecdotes that can draw on his 45 year career. His knowledge and skills are almost legendary in our profession, only quite recently an auditor in one of his courses signed Dave off after spending only a short time with him, telling me ‘he knows what he’s doing’ I’ll tick all the boxes, fill the paperwork in and send you it’ I am very glad Dave has decided to be a part of the Interfleet Team as he is irreplaceable not only in terms of his skills and knowledge but also as a character, something the Railway has always been known for.
It for all the reasons above that I nominate him for this award”.
