Nominations for Rail Team of the Year

Becki Finch

Said the following about Wessex Capacity Alliance Telecoms Design Team:

“As Telecoms Design CRE, Pete has been leading the telecoms design team on the Wessex Capacity Alliance, achieving 100% Cat 1 acceptance on designs submitted so far on this project.

When asked how they had achieved this outstanding record, the team shared some of their special approach which includes close collaboration with each other and with their Network Rail colleagues, engaging with them right from the start of the design process to ensure a thorough understanding of requirements and expectations and continuing this engagement throughout the design process so that the Network Rail PE, Chris Walters, knows exactly what he will be receiving for review and when.

Ensuring consistency of deliverables, the team developed a design template to be adopted on each design package, developing this by committee to ensure full ownership and contribution from every member of the team. This template was then shared with Network Rail to ensure that it would meet their needs, before commencing detailed design of each package. Format, naming conventions, content and style were all pre-agreed to pre-empt any comments that might otherwise have arisen at DRN stage.

A similar collaborative engagement approach was adopted with the Construction CRE, Simon Carlton-Crisp of Colas, when he joined the project at a later stage. This relationship continues as the project enters the construction phase, quickly and efficiently responding to any issues that arise on site to ensure minimal down-time for the site teams.

These practices are now being used as Best Practice examples to support business improvement initiatives across other parts of the business.

The Wessex Capacity Alliance telecoms design team includes:

Pete Froggatt, Ross Taylor, Darren Hawkes & Jordan Bullock (all from AECOM Birmingham office), along with Chris Walters from Network Rail (Waterloo) and Simon Carlton-Crisp (Colas), recognising that the design team alone could not have achieved this result without the support and engagement of the other team members.“
