Victoria O'Reilly

Said the following about Rail Enforcement Officers GTR North:

“The Rail Enforcement Officers on GTR North are a new concept and been on Patrol since January 2016. A team of 22, 11 Great Northern and 11 Thameslink, get fully involved in supporting various aspects of the network. They support Staff at Stations up and down the route with reducing ASB, staff assaults and assisting during disruptions. They also provide a reassurance presence on trains giving passengers customer service advice as well as preventing crime by spotting incidents quickly and resolving them.

They are the eyes and ears of the railway and have submitted over 400 Intelligence reports to BTP which assisted with BTP deployment and reducing Crime.

The team have had 9 successful suicide interventions while on patrol.

They also hold individual ASB cases where stations are having particular problem whether is to be with homeless, ASB or bike crime. They then work with other agencies and Station Staff to resolve the issues. For example Elstree and Borehamwood reported problems with a local Football Academy fare evading and abusing Staff at the station. This had been a ongoing problem for many years but never fully resolved. The TL Team conducted patrols, interacted with the Footballers, met with the School and discussed the issues with Management. They then worked closely with the club to deter future issues. The past 6 months the Station staff have reported no problems.

The REOs play a big part in supporting major events. GN commit to assisting with crowd control and ASB during events such as Easter Electrics, Secret Garden Party and Strawberry Fayre. Thousands come through our gates and travel on our trains and the team work 24hrs to cover these events to ensure safety of both Staff and passengers.

They also deliver rail safety advice in local Primary Schools, and also have input in meetings such as Personal Safety Groups. The team have also put together a Hate Crime policy for the Company to introduce and will play part in the new Hate Crime Ambassadors which will support staff up and down the network.

The team are incredibly focused and driven. They are very flexible and alter shifts and locations to fit the need of the company. I am very proud of our REOs and how they put in 100% and expect nothing in return. They always put the customer and staff before themselves. They are a credit to the company.“
