“During the carrying out of his train driving duties; in June upon seeing what he thought was a person at track side prior to the station, Liam applied the emergency brakes which brought his train to a stand just prior to the platform. Upon coming to a stand Liam was unaware if the train had struck the person or where they were located.
After following the immediate protocols regarding getting the railway lines blocked and calling the emergency services, Liam proceeded to leave the cab of his train to check where the person was. He very quickly located the person who was still at the track side and in a very distressed state, insisting he wanted to end his life.
After some reassuring dialogue from Liam the person asked him if he would give him a hug, as he could not remember when someone had hugged him last. Liam gave the person a hug, reassured him that everything would be okay, and that help was on the way. Liam then managed to assist the person to the safety of the station platform where they awaited police assistance, which arrived 30 minutes later.
The person was subsequently taken the local hospital by the British Transport Police where he was given the appropriate assistance under the care of the NHS that Liam had previously reassured him he would receive.
As Liam’s line manager I believe he gave the immediate intervention in a very serious situation that potentially saved the very distressed and venerable person’s life. In addition, Liam gave the immediate duty of care, reassurance and human kindness to the person to prevent the situation escalating while awaiting assistance from the emergency services.
Liam has already received a small token of the company’s gratitude regarding his professional actions on the day of the incident, but I strongly believe he is worthy of my nomination for this Samaritans Life Saver Award.“
“Just a line to thank you for an absolutely incredible night. The night itself was really fantastic and I said to my wife, June, just let’s sit back and enjoy it: no pressure as I didn't really think that I would win! Well, as soon as 25 years were mentioned, I took one look at June, while shaking my head in disbelief. Then the marvelous rail and face shaped glittering award and a certificate as well…………………and then the (totally unexpected) cheque!. I was also extremely pleased to see David Maidment recognised. His achievement very appropriately wins the whole night for me and the standing ovation that he received was very well deserved. It was really worth being there just for that. Thanks again to all who were involved in this event (I am now drinking my coffee out of the Rail Seventeen cup at work!).”
