The RailStaff Awards 2024

Claudine Molloy

Said the following about East Midlands Trains Control:

“In April 2018 East Midlands Trains suddenly lost a well-loved member of their team to a brain tumour. Martin McBride was only 40 years old when he passed. This unexpected lost was deeply upsetting to the East Midlands control team. They decided that they would try to make something positive out of this tragic situation and came together to support the Brain Tumour Charity in Martin’s memory.

They regularly hold cake sales and hold raffles to raise money but they have also organised some bigger events:

On the 9th September 2018 five members of the Team (Cheryl Neil, Charlotte Garbutt, Will Ryan, Sam Clement and Kuldip Chama) did a sky dive. They decided to do this as Martin had always joked that he would never do one when it was suggested as a team building activity. They bravely jumped 12,000 ft despite half of team having a fear of heights!

In the November 2018 four male members of the team (Simon Kilby, Tony Marsden, Ross Milne and John Pateman) are shaving off their beards and/or long hair. They are hoping this will be in time for Movember when they can grow their much loved hair back!

Everyone who organises these events does it in their own time and all raffle prizes, cakes and razors are donated from members of the team. They work tirelessly to raise funds. They not only have a passion to honour Martin’s memory but also to help raise funds towards a cure for Brain Tumours. They continually support one another and continue to look for ideas on how to raise money.

Separate to the above the also continually support other charities (Barnados, Society for the Blind, Stroke Charities) through dress down day and other events.

I believe that they really deserve this award as the work so hard to raise money for all the charities especially the Brain Tumour Charity.“
