The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Train Driver of the Year

Helen Barnes

Said the following about Chris Compton:

“Chris volunteered to speak at the Track Safety Alliance and then be filmed to talk about Near Misses with track staff and the impact it can have on a driver. Chris has been in the rail industry for over 30 years, but his willingness to talk to frontline staff, and talk on camera, in a film that is on the Track Safety Alliance website and is used in PTS induction training is inspiring. Chris is engaging, to watch and listen to, getting a safety message across and reinforcing that we are a 'family', who need to look after each other and ourselves.

Chris did these talks with no personal gain, apart from his desire to improve safe behaviours of staff who work track side. He also talked about when he was nearly struck by a train, so is able to see a person’s view point from both sides and puts this across with empathy and kindness. He deserves to win this award, as he has gone over and above his duty in educating and making teams aware of Near Miss consequences with trains.“
